The rackmount one has a few extra digital outputs and XLR outputs. Feature wise they are identical though, the Live actually has MORE effects built in when you purchase it as it comes with the extra effects model pack.

Re: POD XT Pro vs. Live

the XT Live does not have balanced outs. so it won't sound as good recorded direct. but if you mic it up with a pwr amp and cab = no problems.

How does this work in the loop for time based effects. Can you bypass the pre amp on the unit?

XT Live also has a variax plugin.

Go with the XT live if you'll be gigging a lot more than recording.

I also thought the amp-packs modules would only work with the Podxt and the live but not the Podxt pro but I could be wrong.

Plus for the small differneces there is a huge difference in price and the live is all combined with the foot pedel and yes can be used directly as your effects only.

Re: POD XT Pro vs. Live

I know the XT Live has USB outs, so you can record it 'direct to digital' on your PC with better fidelity than any analog out. Not sure about the XT Pro.

I'm pretty happy with my Live... it's my vetta backup.

i'm using the live exclusively now. and diggin it!
you can use it in the loop for just effects (bypassing the amp models)if you want. overall its like a vetta preamp without as many models (but you can purchase the rest of the models in the 2 available model packs.)

Thanks John. I'm thinking about getting rid of my ME-50 and V-Amp 2 for on of these.

Pete is correct about the USB connection, but you won't be able to monitor yourself that way. You will still need to connect the left out or the headphone out to your computer (or powered monitors) for monitoring purposes.

Either way, it sounds great and has a ton of tweakability. I love mine.

I have the pod xt pro and just put the metal pack on it and I love it. If you play metal I would suggest getting the metal pack. Just my 2 cents.

I also got the FBV longboard, so I can use it live and switch to lead tones etc.

Sorry, that's wrong... you can set up the Pod XT Live as a soundcard... it will take sound in AND out from the USB port. Just plug your headphones into the Pod XT and select it from the list on your PC... you'll hear the Pod XT *and* the PC sound through the headphones. This works great for reamping. It's confusing as hell at first setting it up this way though.

Again, you're correct, but I don't like wearing headphones. The setup I was referring to is if you wanted to monitor things "live".
