best clean sound from an 800? Off. The amp kills distorted, it's clean can suck my fat balls.

right man, but for the best result by using the MZ the 800 should run as a clean amp.
using the low-input and turn down the gain, then setup the MZ and there you go.

btw. anyone tried the marshall Jackhammer insdeed of the MZ?
i checked out the JH yesterday, which is an absolut killer pedal and way cheaper than the MZ.

I love my Peavey Ultra 60 watt 1x12 combo alone, but when I stomp on the MZ, it takes it into another dimention baby!! My favorite distortion pedal. Jack.

I always thought they worked really well ass a boost for a marshall but never really liked turning the gain up on them.

Oh I love the 800, I've just never liked the clean. Never tried it with the pedal. My next amp will be a Diezel VH4. ON THE USED MARKET.

The Analog Man Metal Zone sounds awesome with probably any tube Marshall head. I've used it with an 800 and with a 1959 re-issue. It kicks all kinds of ass through both of them..

It may be that I have a small amp (Marshall MG30DFX), but for the life of me no matter how much I've tried, I've never been able to get the Metal Zone to sound good.

I've tried all different settings with no luck at producing a tone I like. I find it to sound very thin compared to any of my MXR pedals, but since I only payed 90 dollars Canadian (unopened in a pawn shop) for it I'm not too upset and will keep it around till I get a better amp to try it on that.

nothing like slammin the front end of a JCM 800 I used a SD-1 and GE-7 in front of 2203/2204's for years. Powerful metal, balls to the walls power!

Totally agree Shawn. I usually use a modded SD1 or the Zakk MXR pedal in front of my Zakk JCM 800. It is a beautiful thing...but I really love that Analog Man Metal Zone too. But I had to have it modified, I didn't care for the stock MZ.

The Metal Zone is better if you're trying to achieve a "metal" tone out of an 800. SD1 or MXR OD is better if you're looking for a traditional hard rock tone (Dokken, Ratt, VH, etc). I have 2 Marshall heads (800 and 1959) and all of the above mentioned pedals, so it's really fun to experiment!

MZ is great in front of the 800. I still like the Hotmod in it better though. THe MZ gives it a better scooped mid tone. All good points that everyone has made.

Good luck finding a used Diezel Deneb. Finding a new one is hard enough. Nobody sells them once they own it.

I have a Boss HM-2 that needs a good home, i think the pots need to be cleaned though. Original box, receipt, and BOSS sticker included.
I still keep practicing though.... Mostly because I hate my neighbors.-MakeAJazzNoiseHere

Personally, I loved my Korg 104DS HyperDistortion so much more than my Metal Zone. When I needed a distortion pedal for my previous tube amp, it SMOKED the MT-2 hands down, AND it has two different channels you can program. It was much more brutal, and had a much tighter distortion. Great Death Metal pedal. The MT-2 was nice, but I could NEVER quite get the right sound out of it... unlike the 104DS.

I agree that that combo works very well ...especially in getting a pretty brutal sound..I did that...and also ran it in front of 5150s as well...which it did seem to tighten some of the Peavys flab as well ...

BUT ...I thought it sounded a bit too harsh for my taste...I like something a little more warmer and musical sounding ...I thought it sounded "buzzy" at loud volumes no matter what EQ adjustments I made...it has a abrassive distortion quality that just wasn't right for me..

I am NO fan of OD and distortions pedals in general..but the MZ is definitely one of the better ones for a thick , heavy sound..it is one of the most heaviest one out there..

But I think the Korg Hyper distortion was my favorite stomp...that and some modded TS9s that John's bud does..

My favorite stomps in front of all my 800s at that time...were the orange Boss DS-1s and the yellow OD-1s..

The cool stomps were always the Boss Metal Zones , The OD-1 , DS-1 , the old TS9s and the discontinued and very cool Korg Hyper Dist...that bastage made my pings pinch squeals sound like Zakk like no other..

I have seen many dudes play with Metal Zones in front of many various amps...and it always did sounded pretty decent....if it works for you...then that is all that matters..
