Re: OK I just made a Trade ENGL for VHT

I have a real problem with the lead channel on this amp... It is really really dark no not dark jsu down right muddy... With the EQ on it is perfect but just straight wow it sounds kinda like a muffled high gain plexi... Not very pleasing and I don't get it because I don't have this problem with the other channels the Rhytym and clean are both bright and perfect... The lead is awesome once I switch the EQ on but honestly without the EQ it is almost unusable....

Re: OK I just made a Trade ENGL for VHT

Some people say Lead CH with Graphic EQ on is the way to use the Lead CH of VHT.
In my case, I never used the Graphic EQ and still sounded great to me though and prefered it without Graphic EQ..

I am not sure what kind of sound you are looking for but what I can say is Engl and VHT are very different amps and for me when I switched from Engl to VHT, I had hard time getting the right sound out of that Lead CH like I said before.
It took couple of weeks and different settings with different cabs as well.

Thanks Toru... No doubt they are two different beasts I really like a lot of the tones of the VHT as far as versatility it really is like the bect sounding Mark IV ever had... I love lots about it but it is really missing the over the top gain that the Engl had... the powerball lacked in the lead department to me though... I could never get a lead tone that completely wowed me but then again I am a huge jubilee fan and that was my second amp ever and everything compares to that. I think I need a Powerball, Ectascy, VHT and SLO and I will be happy .... To bad my wife actually has home projects and I can't take an equity loan out just to buy those I think though a 5150 would sit nice next to one of the VHT's or maybe the JSX

Re: OK I just made a Trade ENGL for VHT

I think you need more than 1amp.
That is always the problem of mine and many other people.
I am never happy with 1 amp and I used to have couple amps but that will never happen since I decided not spend so much in gear.

I have been thinking of what I really want for an amp and the result? I became ampless
The other day, I was thinking of buying a 5150 but then asked myself if that is really what I want.
I had maybe 5 of these in the past and sold all of them.
So I have enough reasons that I didn't dig the amp.
This goes with many other amps I used to own including an amp like Bogner Ecstacy.
I had maybe 5 of these in the past 15-16 years including the one I bought it as new when it came out.

ENGL, I had a Savage120 and I loved it. Probably the reason I sold it was I wasn't getting into Metal Amp and wanted something different.
Now I want an Engl again it comes around and goes around.
I sold my VHT because it was a combo and I was using it with 4x12cabs.
I didn't dig the clean CH of VHT and I actally wanted a head version of VHT or something else at the time.
I liked the lead CH though.

The bottomline is I am not in need of an amp now and thinking of getting a Behringer Vamp or something until I find one I really want.

Good luck on getting a right tone out of your VHT!

You... will... own... a... rack....

I had the same trouble... Find a monster power amp, and get preamps that do the different needs... and loop them in and out...

... Didn't wanna hear that did yas? hehehehe....

Re: OK I just made a Trade ENGL for VHT

yeah Tets...it sounds like you would definitely benefit from a rack set up...well for versatility ..

I have one tone ...one sound I use for everything...so my Uber suites me just peachy..and just the lead channel at that..

Ask John...I once went with the whole mutiple tube amp head extravaganza thingy...with four different 1/2 stacks running at the same time..that was stupid...cool but stupid!

I used to run a Recto , Soldano , 100wt JCM 800 and a 5150 at the same time...then I even added a MRK IV and a couple of Ampeg Lee Jackson heads in the mix....all at the same time... Bill how long did it take you to setup? You had to go in the day before a gig I bet

Re: OK I just made a Trade ENGL for VHT

in my case of having the 50 CL with EQ - t if it didn't have the EQ I wouldn't keep the amp. I'm complete opposite from what Toru said, I leave the EQ all the time in both channels. I also have leave the boost on most of the time as well.

Yeah Shawn I agree... But in all Channels they sound good except the lead with out the EQ which is so strange to me

Yeah, Bills rig then was friggin cool, he was such a gear whore. He had a guy make a big footswitch to switch among all those amps. His place was wall to wall halfstacks.

It was so cool to be able to A/B all those amps. We tried everything in those days, and eventually found we didn't like any of them all that much! haha...

Yeah I tend to find that out too that is why I want the vetta to work so bad... Then you have it all but just like everything else there is no simple answer

Re: OK I just made a Trade ENGL for VHT

I figured since all tube amps have there own sound...why not try and combine my faves at that time..it was fun..and I never lost money buying and selling amps..it actually helped buy alot of that stuff..

It was cool to compare all that gear...right next to each other..

I never bought a VHT...I remembered trying the Pittbull when it first came out and I almost bought that...but I remember liking that Korean Soldano 60..so I went with that instead..and it was cheaper..

I tried a VHT CL without EQ when I bought my Uber and I loved it...Then I played the Uber...two different animals all together..The Uber is so much heavier..and I like that for the crap I play..

BTW John always sounded like John ..no matter what the hell he owned...He had a 100w JCM 900 he tweaked to sing like Criss Oliva..kinda like my Marshall rack tone does now..

I had a new 900 at the time too...it sounded nothing like his...mine sucked!

His CAE / VHT tone is just a cleaner , BIGGER and better version of "his" sound..he still navigates his tone to a VH / Oliva lead tone..

I would love to Compare ...to actually A / B My Uber to a few heads out there..like the Powerball and the Cobra..and Deisel..

I'm really content with my Uber at the moment....I had some time to tweak it a bit..still think it would benefit getting those damn EL34s outta the there..

what comes in a Powerball...6l6?

if the powerball's preamp section is comparible in brutality to that of the Bogner ...then I may like that better ..and I'll just get that instead of butchering the Ube..

anyone ever try a Ashdown Fallen Angel...the 180 watt jobber..??!!!

That is interesting Bill about the CL w/o EQ. I have never played one without the EQ but from what I understand, and supposedly confirmed but Steve at VHT, that the CL's w/o EQ are voiced differently that the ones with EQ. Most people, myself included just assumed the ones w/o EQ are just like EQ version wit it off and that just isnt the case.

Well to be honest Shawn..it was the only VHT CL I ever played...w/ or without the EQ..

I was at this dudes house to buy the Uber when I spotted his friends VHT....

so I was like ...let my touch it...gimme gimme gimme...

I plugged in and drove the dude nuts with my best 25 minute version of Eruption..

I just lost track of time...because the damn thing sounded pretty good..
