• Old Marshall Valvestates

I know Chuck Schuldiner and Glen from Eidolon/Megadeth use(d) these heads, but what exact model was it? I remember a VS100, and some model with a number for a name, started with like 80** or something? Anyways, are both of these the same amps? If not which one did these guys use? Anyone here have any experience with em? I figure if it's good enough for Chuck it's good enough for me, and they sell for like $300 all day long on eBay...

8100. I like the VS100 better. Look around, you can usually find them for around $250.

Out of curiousity, what makes the VS100 better in your eyes? I'm buying Zeeg's so I'm looking forward to messing around with it! I read that Chuck Schuldiner used a Sonic Maximizer with his so I might pick one of those up for fun, they're pretty cheap for the single channel model...

I had the 8100 and I liked it. Don't expect to get a ton of bottom out of it but it really sounds like a Marshall. Nice smooth gain and a really nice clean channel too! Back in the day, the 8100 was a very popular amp in the studio. Many bands used them for recording. It is also a nice gigging amp. Small, loud and lightweight. Don't worry about changing the preamp tube unless it is damaged.

I've never tried the 8100, so I can't say for sure. The VS100 has a single clean channel and two overdrive channels, each with it's own master volume. The first of the two channels is not very high gain, and does AC/DC to a tee. The other gain channel is much higher gain, and does a decent job of the heavier stuff. I have pretty much always played Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera type stuff, and used the VS100 for 3 years.

strange. my experience with them is exactly the opposite. to my ears they sound halfway decent at loud bedroom volume, but at gigging or rehearsal volume they sound thin and harsh to my ears, with a very brittle highend. you're right about the bottom end, though....actually thats one of the things i liked about it: it's not bottom heavy like most modern metal amps are.
the former guitarplayer of my band used to play the vs100 live all the time, and i used it for two gigs and one rehearsal before deciding to bite the apple and carrying my beloved mesa to every gig i couldn't get a decent sound out of it, no matter what i did.

but, well...each to his own. after all, they MUST be capable of producing great sounds....listen to death - symbolic, one of the greatest metal sounds i ever experienced, and chuck used an 8100. (someone above mentioned that he used to use a sonic maximizer with it. that could explain something...thread hijack: does anybody know more details about chucks rig?). and it's not all in the studio tricks, because even the live in L.A. album doesn't sound too bad.

I thought it sounded a bit thin live too. That is why I mentioned the lack of bottom. It does sound like a Marshall though. Maybe my "smooth" comment was off base. It sounds like a Marshall. Lots of midrange and highs. If you want bottom you can add an EQ in the effects loop. Thats what I did. I used a GE-7. It can't compete with a honkin screamin tube amp live but that isn't what it was designed to do. It is probably the best of any of the Valvestates.

FOR OUR AMERICAN TOUR, I USED THE SAME KIT WITH A FEW ALTERATIONS. I USED REMO COATED EMPEROR BATTERS FOR HEADS AND I DROPPED THE ICE BELL IT WAS KIND OF A SISSY TOY ANY WAY, THAT ICE BELL, SO, BY THE TIME WE HIT EUROPE, MY TECH-GOD, "EVIL STEVE" SUPPLIED ME WITH A PRETTY MANLY DEVICE: A 105mm GERMAN CANNON SHELL FROM 1953!! IT COMPLEMENTS THE PROP QUITE WELL. OH YES, I SWITCHED BACK TO USING ZILDJIAN CYMBALS AGAIN. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THE 20" MEGABELL TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO CUT THROUGH EVERYTHING ON STAGE (AND BREAK A FEW GLASSES IN THE BAR AREA AS WELL...) AND IN EUROPE I'VE USED 2 DIFFERENT KITS THIS YEAR AS WELL, A SONOR AND A PEARL.
