  • Home recording equipment recommendations needed

My drummer and I have decided one day soon to do something about home recording and get a good or decent setup.

We need something that we can record into with multiple inputs.

Then I need something that I can use that doesn't need to be mic'd to lay down ideas late at night straight to the computer.

    For my drummer and I:

I was looking at the Tascam Firewire board. Lots of inputs, portable, we could use it at our homes, share it, etc. I can probably get one for around $950-999

I'm also considering the DigiDesign002 but it's at least 300-600 more than the Tascam, around $1300-1600.

Both units have built in mic preamps.

We could use a variety of software to record on. I'm on the Mac, he's a PC guy. I know we can find an acceptable cross platform software solution.

For myself for late night idea capture:

So I was looking at the PodXT which has a USB interface. Built in amp models, effects, etc. I'm not looking for killer tone out of this. That's what my Framus is for when I mic it. But it looks cool for capturing ideas. Looks like they're around $299 new, $200-250 used.

M-Audio just released the Blackbox which is similar to the Pod. It's around $279 new.

I still have my Peavey TubeFex Preamp which I could run into the Tascam or get a small firewire interface to plug it into. That would take the place of the Pod or Blackbox. I could get an interface like this if the Tascam is at my drummer's place:

Any thoughts or ideas? Anyone use the Pod's or Blackbox for recording? This is not the place for an amp modeling debate. I just want to know if the thing is easy to use, reliable, etc. I wouldn't use it for final tracks.
