  • 8/16 ohm speaker switch

What is the makeup of the little 8/16 ohm switch on an amp?
Is there a resistor or a transformer behind it?
Also, I have a Fender combo that is Solid State 130 watts (65 per side). It takes 2 12" 8 ohm speakers. If I replaced the 8 ohm speakers with 16 ohm would I notice much of a drop in volume or tone?

The 8/16 ohm switch on a tube amp are different taps on the output transformer.

What do you think about using 16 ohm speakers in a stereo 65w per side combo that needs 8 ohm speakers? Will I hear much of a volume level difference?

Lemme jump in with the question.

I'm looking for Fender's Hot Rod DeVille 212, which has 60W@2 or 4 ohms, but the Deluxe model has 40W/8 ohm.

So, what's the difference? Is it hearable or anything?

With SS amp are you changing one or both speakers ? If just one that speaker would put out about half the power as the 8ohm. With both there would be a 3db drop in output & the amp would drop to half the power( 65 watts total).
