Marshalls to Europe and I believe Canada had EL34's stock.
Jim Marshall believed the 6550 was more durable a tube, so imports to USA had the 6550 instead of the EL34's to survive the transport. As Pete says, if it came with 6550's, you should be ok running KT88's with a rebias.
You could probably get a bias mod kit for it as well.

Also check your speaker rating(in watts). You should get quite a bit more power, so you don't want to fry your one speaker.

KT88s and 6550s put out the same amount of power. You're not going to see a difference other than new tubes versus old ones.

You can run KT88's in that amp. If it came with 6550's you'll need to just have it biased. It it came with EL34's you'll need to have a couple things changed to give it the proper bias voltage range.
Have your tech change those original filter caps. Everyone of those channel switcher JCM800's I've seen come thru my shop with the brand cap were bad. Most of them showed signs of leakage.
I have a 2205 head version of that amp here right now getting some gain mods. The thing smokes now!

2205 is the two channel 50 watt, right? Those have plenty of gain stock... must be incredible now.

I think that the 2205's are just the head version of the 4210. Looks just like Rons middle pic but in a head case

It is. 2205's are the 50 watt head version of that combo as is the 4212. 2210 is the 100w head of the 4211 combo.
