Re: Boss GT-6

We used to call Wah a "crutch".
I will need to ask Jim (Sambencuda) what version we are playing! I have heard the live version so many times I just assumed the studio version had wah in it too. Thanks for the info. I would rather play it without the wah anyway. Now I am learning Jeff Watsons solo in Don't Tell Me You Love Me. There is a lot of crazyness going on in that solo. I think that is the 8 finger tap/pulloff riff. Good thing I have 10 fingers. Jim is Brad Gillis in that song. Warble baby...

Janick Gers reportedly uses some Mesas in Maiden, but I am unsure which models. Close enough I guess.

let me put it this way.

watch rock in rio - listen carefully to the guitar tone and the overall sound.

then put in Maiden England. - notice how MUCH BETTER the guitar sound is as well as the overall sound.

I thought the Mesa model sounded closer than the Marshall. I am really not sure what they used for amps. I never actually saw an amp of any kind at a Maiden concert.
The solos sound like Marshall but the chords sound like Mesa.

Re: Boss GT-6

"Maiden England" had that futuristically fizzy processed sound that defined "Somewhere In Time" and "Seventh Son" given that they were doing the "Seventh Tour" during that recording. The copy I have is a bootleg and the overall quality is kinda low but the songs rip (except "Wasted Years" live... what a butchering! ).

My thick Maiden-style tone comes from the Hi-Gain emulator on the GT-6 set on Lead Stack. Before, I used to use the '59 Marshall I + II but found it too woofy and not "sizzly" enough.

Yea, its fizzy to me too. Actually, the guitar tone is pretty aweful. The bass tone however RIPS.
Maiden has always been about the vocals and the bass as far as I am concerned. I dialed up a nice fizzy Mesa tone and it sounded pretty close. I like to dial in my Marshall tones with as little gain as I can get away with. I just love the way a stock medium gain JCM800 cuts through the mix.

Re: Boss GT-6

Boss Gt-6 plugged straight into the effects return on either my Carvin MTS3200 or a Marshall JCM900 rips.
The Matchless models are absolutely outstanding. I used it at band practice last night and I was extremely pleased with my tone. Maybe I just have a knack for programming the GT6 but I gotta tell you... I can really get some killer tones out of it. I spend around 8 hours programming 12 patches by using reference tones from the actual songs we are covering. It is certainly worth the effort when I can show up at practice all ready to go for every song without even touching my amp. I just step on pedals. I love this thing. I am so glad I got another one.

It really did sound amazing. It's tough competition for my Single Rectifier/G-major combination!

Re: Boss GT-6

I just did a gig today using the GT-6 plugged into the effects return on a Peavey 5150 II running through a 5150 4 x 12 cabinet. I also ran a line out from the GT-6 firect to the board. We did everything from Sabbath to Journey to Skynard to Priest to Kiss to Pearl Jam. We covered the entire spectrum from the 70's up to current. I used three banks of patches. Marshall Plexi, Marshall JCM800 and Matchless. How did I sound. All the other band members complimented my sound. The other guitarist was playing a 18v EMG equipt Les Paul through a 5150 and a 5150 cab and a ton of pedals in the loop. He also had a switching system hooked into an acoustic simulator for Dead or Alive by Bonjovi. He has a mess of pedals, wires and stuff to step on. He is dumping all his crap and getting a GT6. I showed up with 3 guitars, my GT6 and a few cables. Thats it. It took 1 minute to set up and I was ready rock. The crowd said my sound was like they were listening to the actual song. I have to admit.. I have that GT6 dialed in BIGTIME. Trouble free gigging. It is so much fun when you can gaurantee yourself great sound regardless of the amp you have to plug into. BTW... my GT6 hotrodded Matchless patch literally ate the real 5150 for lunch.
He did say one thing to me... He wondered how he could get all his pedal sounds if he stopped using them and went to a GT6. I had to show him that every Boss pedal he had on the floor was already inside my GT6. The Acoustic Simulator, DD5, flanger, phase shifter, wah (the GT6 has a killer Bad Horsie 2 wah.. its called Fat Wah), Stereo Chorus, Tuner... etc... everything he had on the floor was already in the GT6. Another GREAT gig thanks to the Boss GT6.

Re: Boss GT-6

I FINALLY tried my GT-6 in front of my Mesa DC-2 yesterday. The flexibility of the GT-6 with the tube warmth of the Mesa. It was truly beautiful. I don't think I'll ever use the Mesa on its own again, as I find its crunch sound not to my liking.

I hate the GT-6's wah sounds in contrast to jgcable and think it sounds NOTHING like my Bad Horsie 2. I run guitar into Bad Horsie 2 into GT-6 into amp. That setup is noiseless. However, if I run guitar into GT-6 into Bad Horsie 2 into amp, I get some noise, but the wah sound is incredibly vocal and unreal. There's a weird tradeoff there. But I GOTTA have my Bad Horsie 2.

Next I'll have to try what my guitar teacher does in live gigs... guitar into GT-6 and stereo out into two different amps.

Are you going into your effects return on your Mesa??
Also, try the Fat Wah option. I have noticed that the wah sounds much better on some patches than others. This is because of the order of effect chain that is programmed into some of the patches. Try messing around with the placement. Put the wah closest to your guitar (like I am sure your bad Horsie 2 is).

I looked at the effects chain order on the GT-6 and I think the default setting is that the wah is "placed" right after the guitar.

I should try putting it into the effects return instead of straight into the front input. However, I'm basically using my GT-6 as my "preamp" and getting ALL my sounds out of it. Seems like you're doing the same thing except you're plugging into the effects return. I'll remember to try it next time.

Man, I REALLY need to join that GT-6 forum I've been meaning to read up on for two years. There's still so much I don't know about the unit but there's so little time in a day.
