What about a Peavey 5150? Haven't played through a Peavey XXX combo, but if it's anything like the head, I'd definately try one out.
Not tried the Soldano or the engl though dude, so can't compare.

1st of all... where are you in Connecticut?
2nd... the Peavey 5150 combo is brutal. Its a heavy mutha but most metal 2 x 12 tube combo's are.

I'm in Milford. There are a few more of us right in this area too. Welcome to the board.
I prefer a separate amp head and a 2 x 12 cabinet. They are easier to haul around. 2 x 12 high power tube amps that are good for metal tend to way around 80lbs+.
I play a Carvin MTS3200 with a choice of 2 cabinets. A Mesa Boogie 3/4 open back with 1 90w speaker in it and a Randall 2 x 12 cabinet loaded with Altec Lansings. Either cabinet can knock a house down and my entire live rig including my guitars all fits easily in my Nissan Sentra.

+1.....The 5150 combo is killer for metal. Cleans are another story.

Yeh, I regret selling my 5150. Sounded even better when I hooked it up to my XXX 4x12 cab. If you get one, make sure it has castors fitted!

The only downside of the 5150 combo is the weight. 90+lbs and hard to carry. Even with casters/

Yeh, it's not the best designed amp to move around. Particularly with no side handles. But the sound more than makes up for that.

I've got a Laney VC50, and I get great metal tone out of it.
