Most delays sound pretty rough on the input, because they send so many signals to the amp the notes interfere with each other, which adds dischord and dissonance and an overall sense of harshness. An effects loop cancels this interference, which is really cool.
Since your using an old Marshall with no effects loop, I would try a Boss DD-3 (to me, it sounds warmer than the DD-6, its also cheaper which is nice bonus) because it (really strangely) leaves your playing pretty clean, and then adds delays in a "smart" way after it. Analog delays sound warmer, but dont act nicely with inputs.
Otherwise, if you had an effects loop, an analog delay or a high quality digital delal would work best.
