Re: How healthy is it to crank a tube amp to full?
I've always found the best sound with tube amps comes with cranking the master volume at least 3/4s and adjusting the gain to taste. Pushing the power tubes gives you a much smoother distortion than just preamp distortion which tends to be grainy. I use a Weber Mass to attenuate the output volume. Early EVH was done by running his Marshall Plexi into an attenuater and then into a H&H power amps powering his Marshall cabs.
