• what to take to a gig

hi all

what do you guys carry to a gig for backup purposes? i'm not talking about your normal stage rig here, but the stuff you're taking with you in case something breaks down?

at the moment i think i'm not taking enough stuff with me.
i have two guitars, spare speaker and guitar cables (in addition to my wireless system i'm normally using), but when it comes to amps i pretty much rely on good luck
no spare amps, no spare fuses...only a couple of spare pre and powertubes which are worth exactly nothing because i don't have spare fuses to replace the broken fuse in case of tube failure

anyways, just post some random thoughts and ideas

I take a spare axe, spare fuses, cords, strings, strap, batteries, and my toolkit which consists of a full set of metric and imperial allan keys, screwdrivers, wire cutters, pliers, soldering iron, solder, flux, and a whole pile of other miscellaneous crap that I will probably never need. I guess I must really travel light then. Other than a backup guitar, I only bring spare tubes and strings.

Strings (and whatever tools needed to change them), full spare set of tubes, fuses, a couple of spare cables, and a back-up guitar.

Redundancy is key. The problem is carrying all that sh*t. You're probably not going to want to change strings in the middle of a gig, so an extra guitar set up and ready to go is a requirement, especially if you use a floating bridge!

Re: what to take to a gig

I bring a Pod XT live - if my amp goes down, then during a drum solo I can just plug it into the PA and go. It won't sound as good as what I was using, but it is a hell of a 'spare tire' for a gig.

Guitar wise I usually take several, and strings, extra cables, batteries, couple of screwdrivers, SEVERAL extension cords (do you really know how far from power you may end up being, or if you'll have to plug into a jack far away because the club has shitty electricity and you'll blow their fuses if everything goes into the same circuit?) etc.

Pete

I usually bring 2 guitars and whatever amp setup I'm using that night. I think I'll start bringing my J-Station just in case though. While nothing has happened yet. Something might.

Re: what to take to a gig

Most I bring:

Strings, an extra speaker and several instrument cables, fuses, extra picks, my complete guitar tech toolbox(my pro gear), spare amp head, extra guitar, baseball bat, .45, flashlight, guitar stands, etc...

LEAST I've brought: Nothing. We borrowed everything from SMD who were on the bill, we just squeezed in the last minute cause we knew everyone there. Had to play a Bronze series Warlock tuned to E with high wire tension strings.

I usually just bring a few cables, strings and fuses. My SG is reliable as all hell, and it only takes a half second to change a string on it. That and I haven't broken a string playing in like 5 years. A full complement of tubes for the VHT is over $200(I just had it retubed, so I might carry a few old spares with me).

Re: what to take to a gig

I travel light also.

Main guitar, one backup guitar, one head, one 4x12, my wireless and the two other pedals I use. In addition to that I bring about 4 extra long standard cables just in case. I used to bring an extra head just in case, but lately I've been avoiding that. Nine times out of ten we're playing with bands that we know so if something goes wrong we can borrow a cab or head. This is just local gigging though, if we were doing anything like a mini-tour, full fledged tour I'd definitely be bringing a lot more.

I also make sure to bring two 32oz. bottles of water since I usually go through a ton on stage. And most importantly, at least 4 or 5 picks!

I bring everything mentioned above + pot holders. Change hot tubes in a second... Can't play with toasted fingers now can ya!

I used to bring a ton of backup and spares of everything. Now I travel super light. 2 100w heads, 1 SS, 1 tube,2 2 x 12 cabinets, a few extra cords for guitar, speaker and power, 2 guitars,a flashlight an extra set of strings, 2 guitar stands and my Boss GT-6. It all fits easily in my Nissan Sentra.
