ahhhhh...I simply suggested to try using a BBE 422 BEFORE having some "fucktard" (not you) fuck with his amp...

are WE clear now..?

No sweat man! I saw my mods mentioned and just didn't want people putting two and two together thinking I do hack work like some others out there do, that's all. Thanks for not thinking I'm a fucktard!
I generally recommend guys try all the simple options before having a mod done. I'll even talk someone out of sending an amp here if I don't think I can help them towards the tone they're after. I'm not all about the $$$.

OK Jerry..cool

in 1987-88 I had a friend that sent his mint white jcm 800 Mashall and 1200 duckies to CA to Jose Arrandando..

just to get it back a year and a half later...just so he could put it back to original ...because it sounded like ass..

Well Bill, that doesn't mean that every mod will turn out like your friends.
What was he after? Did he know what Jose was going to do to it? Jose's mods were nothing like Lee Jackson's or Mark Cameron's, etc. If he was looking for fire breathing gain, he sent it to the wrong guy, but he should have known that. For 12 bones I sure as hell would have known that!

Let me just say, I've heard two of Jerry P's modded 5150s. I don't like 5150's, but these things sounded fantastic. So unless you or Siggy have played or heard these mods, well...you can fill in the blanks.

Chuck,

I said i wasnt bashing his mods, i was just saying with the choices today there is not many reasons to get modded amps anymore. I am sure they sound great and his mods are great, but at the same time you should just buy a amp that is more to your liking then buying an amp that you dont like and need to get modded! Yes i do understand the concept of liking an amp and then it losing its flavor for awhile, I know this feeling all to well, for exmaple, sometimes i love my mesa and then sometimes i get sick of it, walk away a few days then plug back in and i am in love again.

Yes he said his mods are reversible, but why would i want to pay for an amp, then pay for the mod and possibly pay to have it unmodded if i dont like it, just cheaper for me to buy an amp i like.

I really do believe in the tone gremlin that goes and messes with your amps overnight sometime just to piss you off. But truth be told, alot of times your amp will sound different and you will get disappointed because the power where you are playing has dipped or surged and it is effecting your amp and changing the tone of it, this is something alot of musicians do not realize.

But what it comes down too if i was in love with an amp, then all of a sudden i am getting sick of it, i would try tweaking it more, or changing tubes and all other little things before getting it modded. Hell i would probaly venture to say that after all that tweaking if i am still not digging it anymore then it is time to sell it and buy a amp that is more voiced towards my new taste in tone.

Back in the 80's modding was the thing because everyone needed MORE gain. However look around and tell me how many artists these days that you know that use modded amps? I would venture to say not many besides artists that have been using the same amp for 20+ years. The reason for this is there are just so many amps these days with so many different voicings that you really do not need to get anything modded anymore. Hell even alot of older artists have come into the new generation and now use newer amps, Lynch as been known to use Mesa's and latley Bogner Uber. I know stryper were using 5150's as well as Jake E. Lee and Queensryche i believe are now using Mesa Dual's and Peavey 5150's. So it just goes to show you that even artists that use to get there amps modded now use regular off the shelf amps.

What eats me is alot of these people that do mods now spread false rumors like my mod gets rid of the buzziness, hell i bought my mesa because I love the massive amount of pre-amp gain. I am sorry but there was never an amp that i couldnt EQ and tweak right to get it to the sound i want. Hell with my Mesa Roadking i can pretty much get any tone i want from a nice blues or jazz to a 60's rock to 70's and 80's all the way up to moderm. Yes it may never get an exact JCM800 tone, but it is close enough that i am happy.

But that is my second Grip, If you want your mesa to sound like a marshall then do yourself a favor, go buy a freaking marshall and vice versa if you want your marshall to sound like a mesa then just go buy a mesa. If you want more of a classic rock amp buy yourself an amp suited for classic rock, dont take a high gain amp and get it modded to have less gain! Hell that is why they make a little knob called Gain, you twist it one way and you get more gain, you twist it the other way and you get less, very simple concept.

My third grip is people bashing amps, your Mesa is all Pre-amp gain and sounds like crap, mean while what do they do, they take a pedal, throw it in front of there JCM800 to cause the Pre-amp tubes to scream with you guessed it, more Pre-amp gain. Or they get there JCM800's modded with another Pre-amp gain stage, kinda ironic if you ask me.

Sorry if it seems like i am going off, but for the longest time i believed the hype, truth be told some of the best tone i have heard where from artists that used the most simple unmodded amps.

Mesa amps are not world played just because they have a cool look, they are played by many because with the right tweaking you can get a kick ass tone out of them and many different tones. Peavey 5150 also has a kick ass tone and there are many players that use the amp for what it was designed for, pure gain and heavy ass metal!

I actually like Jerry’s response where he says, “I generally recommend guys try all the simple options before having a mod done. I'll even talk someone out of sending an amp here if I don't think I can help them towards the tone they're after.”

When it comes down to it there are so many different options you can try before sending it off to be modded. For exmaple the most simple thing you can do is play around with different tubes or by throwing a EQ in the loop. Why do you think the older mesa's and VHT's with the EQ are in such high demand, yup because the EQ is put between the pre-amp and power-amp and gives you that much more tweaking ability.

Just because you get something modded does not mean you will like it, for example, I have talked to plenty of people that love the voodoo general mod, and then I have talked to many that have the same mod and cant stand it and wish they never had it done. Tone is very subjective and just because one person likes the general Voodoo mod, might not mean that I do or anyone else does.

I am not saying there is anything wrong with modding, just most amps built these days do not need it, but yes there are still alot of older amps or older style amps that still do.

Re: Looking to mod...Peavey 5150H

True Chuck...very true ...about "mods" and those who do them...sure there is good doctors and then you got quacks who don't give a crap..and bill ya.

But I do concur with Siggy on this actually...he nailed my thoughts pretty much..

back in the day if you wanted your Marshall or whatver to scream ...you had them modded..to make them flame throwers..

Now there is sooo many flame throwers out there...right out of the box..it's a beautiful thing really..

Just like Harleys...the old compared to the new...apples and oranges..now you don't really have to customize that much if you don't want to...you can get 'em all dressed up right out the door.

I never played a modded 5150..so I can't comment on that issue at all..I'm sure Jerry knows his shit..

I just know the difference between using a BBE in the loop..or not..the popular consensus and my experience is that there work very well together..

get a mod and a BBE...go nuts..why not...it's only money ...tone is priceless...so I used to think...but after 20 some years of chasing the golden tube and whatnot...I got a couple keeper amps now...and I just play my geetar..or try to..

I love you guys...because ..well..

I'm high..
