• Simple Mesa Boogie tube question

Just curious... I am replacing all the tubes on my Boogie. I am all set on the preamp tubes. For power tubes I narrowed it down to 2 choices:
Matched pair of JJ 6L6GC's and a matched pair of E34L's
or
Matched quad of JJ 6L6GC's

I am really digging the E34L's but since my amp already has 6L6GC's in it it would be nice to use a few of my old tubes for spares. I was also told that the pair of E34L's will give me more of a Marshall crunch.
I play 80's straight up metal. Nothing crazy.
Any suggestions??

I thought Jim(Sambencuda) had his Mesa Single Rect with EL34s and loves it.

i had 2 EL34's and 2 6L6's in my mark IV and thought it sounded WAY better than 4 6L6's. i tend to like more of a marshall-y sound anyway. i'd say go for the mix!!
GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

I had the Mix in my Tremoverb and I liked it better than the straight 6l6

Re: Simple Mesa Boogie tube question

I just ordered them. For preamp tubes I went with:
3 High gain ECC83S's for V1,2 and 3 and a balanced high gain ECC83S for V5.
For power I went with:
Matched pair of E34L's for the outside sockets
Matched pair of 6L6GC's for the inner sockets

They will be here in 3 days.. Full review to follow.

I took your advise Reb. You have been pretty good on amp settings so far.

No, Jims Single Rectifier is the version 1 that doesn't have the bias switch. He can run EL34's or E34L's in his. Version 2 has that feature.

I am running E34L's in my Carvin MTS3200. Maybe that is what you are thinking about.

Re: Simple Mesa Boogie tube question

Version 1 single rectifier would only run 6L6s without a bias mod. Regarding the simulclass 'mix' of tubes... I really liked running 6L6/EL34s in my Mark III. Then again, I like EL34s...

with my roadking i noticed when you mix the el34's with the 6l6's it looses some of its distortion. I think i am more of a 6L6 person for metal, for rock give me them el34's

Re: Simple Mesa Boogie tube question

I agree. My Carvin MTS3200 lost at least 15% of its gain when I switched to E34L's but the tone is so worth it.
I can't believe nobody snagged that amp from me.
