I got a Marshall JMP-1 Quickie review.

How have I exsisted this long without one of these!!!

Holy frickin crap I love this thing. I've only played with it for a few hours mind you. The JMP-1 went to the G-major and then straight to my PC (Alesis MK2 Monitor one monitors and audiophile sound card). This is usually where I have my POD plugged in. I could not believe how good it sounded. I used the emulated speaker outs. I love the two different voicings of Gain 1 and Gain 2. Gain one is more of an AC-DCish marshall tone and Gain 2 is the same with more bite. I cranked the mid and got an awesome Lynch tone. I haven't fooled too much with the clean channels, but they sounded nice and warm from the little bit I used them. I had to get back to that lynch tone. All I need to do now is learn to play like him! [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

It's very simple to use and easy to dial in. With 100 patches, how can you go wrong! I can't wait to link this up with my G-major via midi.

One thing left, a Power amp. It sounds so good through my computer, I'm wondering if I shouldn't consider solid state power amps. Any good solid state suggestions? I thought that the mesa 20/20 would be good match, but if I can save some weight and $$$......

I'm sure most of you already know about the JMP-1. This is new to me and I was totally blown away. I love my Single rectifier, but the JMP-1 nails the tone that truely love. More to come........

Ahh...the classic JMP-1

There are days that I love it and days that I hate it. Nails the Marshall tones pretty darn well I must admit. Try it with it's sister FX unit the JFX-1 if you ever get the chance.

I have been using a Marshall 8004 valvestate power amp for a while now and am very pleased with the results. Even though it is "only" 40 watts it remains plenty loud. Should you really need more consider the 8008 (80 watt model) instead.

They can be found for under $150 for the 8004 and around $200 for the 8008 on ebay.

No its not a Mesa nor say a VHT but it has a great tone for nearly pennies.

Go tube Jim. I have had it both ways. Solid State is lighter and sounds really good but tube is the way you should go. That poor Mesa Boogie..
Nothing beats a Marshall tone.

I love mine. I recently started putting a graphic EQ in the loop and with high output pickups, have managed to get a pretty brutal tone out of just the rythm channel.

I am the same way with mine, days i love it, days i hate it! However defintly go tube, i love mine with my mesa 20/20, killer sound. However if you are more into heavier metal (newer stuff) then get either a mesa 2:90 or one of the marshall 9100/9200 with the 5881 tubes.

BTW I do not mean to highjack someone elses thread but are there any dedicated websites for the JMP-1 around? Does anyone feel that better or aftermarket tubes make a real difference.

I also believe that the manual states that the speaker compensated outputs are strictly for DI or recording no? Is there really a better tone through a power amp than with the standard outs?

I bought my beloved new Marshall rack set up in '96...and I loved it ever since...I NEVER had an amp for this long that made me happy..

I have a Marshall 9200 monobloc w 5881 tubes...a Marshall JFX processor...and a JMP-1 preamp..

I run a BBE 422 in the loop for some extra oooomph...into Four 1960b cabs...

and that's it..No stomps...no bullshit..

just plug in and SHRED...any metal whatsoever..I play death/black metal all the time...I love the definition and super quick attack...well like a Marshall..

I'll put this thing up against any Marshall in the world...I never heard a "better" Marshall sound in all my years....and I had shitloads of awesome Marshalls!

John can rag on it for the DSP crap or whatever all he wants ..But hell, to my ears it's THE shit...and it is soooooo consistant...no fuckin tweaking until blue in the face...I plug in and play my ass off..

I have criss Oliva's tone NAILED...that and Glen Drover...to a T...as a matter of fact I like my tone better...it's beefier than theirs...so fuck it..

This amp is NOT goin' anywhere!

BTW..my other amp is an Uberschall...it's cool and VERY thick and HEAVY...but it doesn't give me the joy this does..

This amps makes me play my best!

I recommend the matching 9200..I love the 5881s NOT the lame ass EL34 version...John and another friend had those and there is no comparison to my ears and hands..mine sounds fuckin' awesome!

DO NOT get a solid state poweramp like the valvestate...they are weenie , thin , and gay...and when you crank 'em...if you can crank 'em (NOT)...they sound like shit!

i use a el34 100:100 and jmp1 rack through 2 1960 cabs for rehearsal, and i like it a lot. i much prefer OD1 over OD2 for fast, tight and defined thrash metal, though. (actually i use OD1 with the gain set at 11 out of 20). it's quite a nice combination and very consistent as well as reliable. very versatile, too, although you won't get anything else than marshall tones [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
my lead guitar player used to use it for gigs, too, but he eventually got a TSL100 head as it's just easier to carry around - the rack setup is a bitch to carry as it's HEAVY.

i have to state that my jcm 800 crushes them both tone-wise, though [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

Go tubes all the way! Nothing sounds better than a Marshall pushing it's power tubes hard. My trick is actually to use a tube head, run it into an attenuator like a Weber Mass or THD Hot Plate, split the signal with stereo effects and then into a solid state power amp. That way you get the sound of the power tubes being pushed but can run at whatever volume works for you live. The SS power amp shouldn't color the sound. That's the trick EVH used for the first albums and for his live sound.

I had pretty close to this setup at first, i use to have the 9100 (5881's) mono block with my JMP-1 and BBE, i never used any effects. I know Iron Maiden uses the JMP-1 with a modified 9200, i think there mod is that one foot switcher switches both channels into the modern function.

Now i run my JMP-1 into a bbe and then into a gmajor and then either into my mesa 20/20 or my mesa 50/50. This is a great setup. I then run either into one of my mesa cabs with v30's or my marshall 1936 with the 75's. I tell you right now the $325 i paid for my JMP-1 about 3 years ago was the best purchase i ever made! As Horns says, it is not going anywhere.

PS if you want metal tone, go with the 5881's, but if you want more of a rock tone then go with EL34's.

I doubt that, as great as the marshall is, it still cant do the mesa recto tone, always good to have both in your arsenal!
