• Greatest Marshall Tone - Ever?

Top 5 'Now that's a Marshall Sound' List

Accept - Screaming for a love bite
Judas Priest - Grinder
Scorpions - Big City Nights
Stryper - Loud N Clear
AC/DC - Back in Black

The ones that should have made the list:
Ozzy - Flying High Again
Dokken - Breaking the Chains
RATT - You're in Love
Metallica - Hit the Lights
Michael Schenker - Armed and Ready
Slayer - Angel of Death
GnR - ??
Zakk - ??

They all have that slightly nasally (or slayer, REALLY nasally) marshall honk/crunch. Whatcha think?

I'd prefer The Four Horsemen over Hit The Lights, but it's all good.

GnR - Definitly Paradise City, and of course the much belated intro to Welcome To The Jungle.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

Old EVH, Dokken Under Lock And Key, some Lynch Mob stuff, some RATT stuff, old ZZ Top, everything by Eric Johnson and that's almost it, not a big fan of Marshall tone.

I like the Accept tone a lot, Balls to the Wall. Was Screaming from Vengence done with Marshalls? I think that Priest has some killer guitar tone. I love Marshall tone but what I find is its hard to find alead tone that I like as much as the rhythm tone.

Anyways I think there are far too many "Marshall" recodings out there to list

Grinder and Armed and Ready both have classic Marshall crunch.

Re: Greatest Marshall Tone - Ever?

to me the BEST marshall tone is Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind. it has that mid-grind, the lower gain, and that super focused sound. to ME that's how a marshall should sound.
GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

The best Marshall tone ever recorded was Ed, period. VH1,VH2,Women and Children....any of them. Ultimate Marshall tone.

Now, some that have also sounded good...

Eric Johnson, Ah Via Musicom
Gary Moore, Still Got the Blues
AC/DC Back in Black
Joe Satriani, Surfing with the Alien
Guns and Roses, Appetite for Destruction

I think those sum up the Marshall tone. I would say Ed's is best all around, and EJ's lead tone is the best Marshall tone ever recorded....ever.

Sleep. The sound doesn't collapse to riffs of early eyes either.

(And the Hellion...Heck, the whole SFV album!)

The first Vanhalen Album, is about as good as it gets for me and Marshall tone. Friggin stellar...

Althought I REALLY do enjoy Trouble on their Plastic Green Head CD, THAT is really impressive Marshall sound for sure..

Tommy Vetterli/TT Baron of Coroner is pretty cool as well.

My friend owns one of Wolf Hoffmann's Marshalls that was modded by Baldringer. It's freaking amazing. I'm not a Marshall person whatsoever but when I played thru it, it was classic Accept tone.w

I think Lynch used the 'urple 100 watt Marshall for leads on Lynch Mob.

VH-1 & VH-4..Scorps - Lovedrive and Blackout albums..Moore on Victims. Slash on Appetite. Kansas, ARS, REO for classic rock Les Paul meets Marshall tone..oh and Sykes of course! Priest - Brit Steel to Vengence era...

Can't argue with your list, it's pretty much who I would list. I might add Bruford-era Holdsworth, but as much as I love his tone, he seems to be able to get it from whatever amp he uses.
