an AH fan, you should check out the Holdsworth Forum sometime. There are a couple of members who know him personally and can vouch for what gear he used for his recordings. The first Bruford album was done with a couple of Marshall JCM800s that he modded himself. Bruford has commented they were always breaking down and that he ran them loud and always had his head stuck in the back of them. For the Ponty recording, he borrowed Darryl Stuermer's Boogie and subsequently bought one himself, which he used in conjunction with the Marshall and a Vox for the second Bruford album. In UK he used a Boogie head and 2 Marshall 4x12s for his lead sound and a Boogie Mark II for his cleans sound. I did see the UK tour and can verify that was his rig. The Gong and Soft Machine stuff was mostly done with Marshalls although he was using some Vox amps back then too.
Always nice to meet another Holdsworth fan!

Likewise..I've been to his site in the past for discography stuff. A friend/mentor of mine turned me onto Ponty back when I was starting to get into bein serious about playing (in the 70's) and he kinda took me under his wing. He was a very talented guitarist.. a total dedicated dude with a great creative flair. Anyways.. AH was the not the reason why me turned me onto Enigmatic Voyage, it was just listening to other instrumental sources with a rock/fusion slant for phrasing. I thouight Darrel Stuermer was playing with a lot of fire but Allan was flooring me with just how smooth n tactful he was in his phrasing... so thats when I started being a fan of his playing. I believe what you say is true. His sound on Feels Good to Me was raunchier. Where you say he used Boogies really matched well with his style I thought. Now that makes me want to sell a Marshall and buy a Boogie all over again. Mesa always made killer stuff, I used to use an old combo for Mark 1 or 2 series for cleans in an A/B in the 80's. Wish I still had that.

For me, I'd have to say VH 1&2 and Yngwie. There's more I like, but these are on the top of my list.

The Boogies really did seem to work for him, although I owned a Mark II for several years and had to get rid of it because it kept blowing tubes and I just couldn't get a sound I liked with it. I'm currently using a Marshall clone that I'm happy with. I think I prefer EL84 powered amps over 6L6 ones. I can still get a sound pretty close to Allans with my rig. I have the same pickup he uses and run a boost pedal and compressor in front of the amp like he does. Now if only I had his chops........
