Re: I need your help!!! Amp guru\'s please step ins

whats up dude,i just got back from playing in canada! we flew up there with just our guitars and pod xt live's.

we were able to get "our sound" out of the local bands gear this way and it made all the difference in the world.

true tube sound is still the best. but it is not convenient for air transit and cab rides to clubs.

i owned a mark 111 blue stripe. loved it!!!!
the fx loop is great for FXs as well as a power amp. if i were you, john, i would eiter A) run the FX from the gt6 through the fx loop. or B)use the FX loop return and run the gt6 with its distortion and whatnot. the mark 111 has an awesome power amp. or C)both guitarists buy a vetta.

we are very happy running our xt live's through whoever's and whatever guitar rig we can borrow from one of the other bands and still have our sound! so that is why i felt inclined to change my signature quote to what it is now. but you've got to do what is best for YOUR band. and that means you need to set down with your other guitarist and decide what the band's tone(s) is/are, and what the needs of the band's gear is. and as much as i love tube amps... hauling those around is just not as economical as using modern technology... and my band already costs us too much money.

ok i've gone on for too long and i could go on and on and argue both ways but i'm a lazy american and i want convenience, and delay. and the tempo tap makes me happy too.

A bit OT but...
I love wireless or an off stage mic set up that I can monitor with headphones. I aim for my own tone and not that of the cover. The surrounding acoustics dictate the need for tone refinement with each new environment I find. So will the positioning of a sound receiver, which in your case is you. There could be a number of alternate settings for your amp, depending on how picky you are and the your ability to move around. Unless you are lucky enough to have a good sound-man or other reliable ear to inform you when you ain’t cutting it...
I have never been out of tubes so to speak but find SS generally don't cut it outdoors or in larger noise filled rooms. Less is more when it comes to FX, especially live.
Just my .02CND, for what it’s worth.
Rock on

I always take my wireless out into the middle of the venue and walk around as much as I can. One really cool thing the sound guy did at our last gig (played for around 1,000 people at a huge outdoors party) was use 2 SM57s on everyone's amp. one was centered, other was edge, both dead on, no angling. He mixed the two signals to taste, and had a MASSIVE sound with every amp. I still think My vetta sounded better than the tube amps there though.

Hi Pete,
Nothin beats wireless in the crowd! Finding a cooperative soundman is a blessing. Tone is subjective as you know. If I ever run out of help moving my gear I will definately try a Vetta. Until then I hear no reason to change. My own tone is kinda like ACDC with a bit of EVH harmonics thrown in. Certainly not new metal but easy to dial in with a modded JCM, stock SLO or similar tube amp.

BTW happy Independence Day.

PS, your Fox has an Ampeg preamp, 12au7 in V2 for Ampeg cleans.

No prob,
Really if you want any input on the Fox, just let me know.
The poweramp is an old Bogen design, I could send you a schematic. You may like to check the FX out, some had a 100K R dropped to ground after the .1mfd cap, some did not. Try it both ways if you are into it or if the signal is too large maybe try a 100K pot...
Peace out.

Re: I need your help!!! Amp guru\'s please step ins

I tried the GT-6 into the effects return of the Mark III. It sounds good. Not great. Just good. It actually sounds much better in the effects loop of the Carvin. I am very picky when it comes to my amp tone. Much more picky than most players. The only perfect tone I have ever gotten was coming from a Hiwatt 120w head pumping through 2 Marshall red 4 x 12 cabs with an MXR Distortion +, Echoplex and a Phase 90 out in front. The Hiwatt was turned WAY THE FUCK up. There are NO clubs I will ever play for the rest of my life that will ever be able to handle that kind of volume.
I am going to try a few different set ups with all the suggestions that were made:
Carvin XV112 and X60 both plugged into the GT-6. One left and one right in true stereo.
Mesa Mark III with the GT-6 in the effects return with an a/b box so that I can toggle between actual Mark III and GT-6.
Mesa Mark III with a few choice stomp boxes and thats it.
I love that amp. I love the tone and damn it.... I am going to start using it.
I tried the 4 cable method with the GT-6 and the Mark III and I though it sounded like ass. Like I said, the Mesa doesn't like processors in its loop.

Hard to find a good FX loop...
Here’s a thought-
I do run stereo(mostly just wet/dry)and to me it rocks but it is hard to get the effect across to the audience if they sit anywhere but in the middle. A real treat can be the use of a differential channel allowing you 3D sound with more depth of field. The 3rd channel is not Mono A+B but the difference A-B. i.e., carries the difference in the signal between the two stereo channels. I use my main cab for this pretty much center stage and the PA for the stereo. The signal can be split before or after the poweramp and it can be derived either actively or passively. Several companies like GT have a version for guitar. It was first introduced during the early ‘Wall of Sound’(what later became know as stereo) era, about 1955. To the ear it fills in the middle and the farther your mains are apart the better.
Just a thought but it works for me.

Re: I need your help!!! Amp guru\'s SOLUTION!!

I don't know why I didn't think of it. My GT-6 has a full manual mode that allows me to assign every pedal a specific function so what I am doing is:
With my Mesa Mark III or my Carvin XV112/X60, I put the GT-6 in the effects loop and I assign the pedals as follows:
Pedal 1 Preamp (solo boost)
Pedal 2 Chorus
Pedal 3 Delay
Pedal 4 Feedbacker
Pedal 5 (CTL1) Harmonizer
Pedal 6 (CTL2) Ring Modulator
Expression Pedal-- Volume and tuner on and off
I throw my Bad Horsie 2 Contour Wah out in front of the amp and I am good to go.

Woo man that is quite the set-up, let us know how it works live. I am looking for a new wah, so how does the Bad Horsie 2 Contour Wah measure up. Just looking mostly for classic tones myself, like EC Cream era. I need something tuff as I throw all my pedals, non rack gear, and cords in the same gig bag and that inturn gets thrown in the back of the van...its a hard life being a pedal in my world

I think the Bad Horsie 2 Contour wah is the best affordable stock pedal on the market. It has a VERY fat sound. It also turns on and off automatically as soon as you step on or off of it. I have also heard many good things about the Tremonti pedal. I like Morley mainly because it has a large platform and they are very roadworthy.

Re: I need your help!!! Amp guru\'s SOLUTION!!

I tried using the GT-6 in manual along with trying separate stomp boxes. Forget it. I need too many different amp sounds, levels and effects live. Jim (Sambencuda) and myself were talking after band practice last night and we both feel the blend of his raw Single Rectifier with my totally processed and effects rich GT-6 is perfect live. It is like he is the live in your face guitar and I am the studio tracks. The blend works really well. My Mark III is killer and is the best pure guitar tone I have ever gotten but its not going to be versatile enough for my needs live. Tonight I am trying a Carvin T100 100w tube stereo power amp with my GT-6 wired in true stereo. I am going to run it through several different cabinets.
2 x 12 wired in stereo
2 x 12 and a 1 x 12 left and right
4 x 12 wired in stereo.
If it works out, my live rig will consist of:
Carvin T100, Boss GT6, Art PS4 Power station all housed in a road case with a Stereo cabinet.
DONE.
My Mark III will continue to provide much enjoyment sitting at home with its matching Mesa speaker cabinet for the occassional paint pealing shredfest.
