• Balanced and Unbalanced???????

    Hey guys,

I have the chance to get a BBE 422 Sonic Maximizer locally for a good price and have a question?

I am currently using a Digitech 2101 that has balanced outputs and was wondering what if any side effects or problems would arise if plugged into the BBE's unbalanced inputs? Thanks guys

    Nope, you'll have no problems.

Thanks Matt Anyone want to second what Matt said so I could feel more confident in knowing that it is going to work without any loss of tone or physical harm to both machines?

How are you conncting the two? With an impedance matching transformer? If not you COULD run into overdriving the input of the BBE.

I do not have the BBE in my possession because it is for sale and I was thinking of buying, but wanted to make sure they could be hooked up! I am a noob to all the technical aspects of gear connectivity so any help or suggestions on how to hook them up for optimal performance would be greatly appreciated!!!!! I would put trust into Matt's opinion... He plugs lotsa stuff into other stuff, like in a professional line of work... Definitely knows his plugability

Seriously, balanced vs. unbalanced... balanced connections allow you to run longer cable runs without interfence because they have both (+) and (-) plus a ground (earth for you all across the pond). Since this is a rack unit, I'd guess you'd be using less that 100 ft of cable, so you will be fine.

Now, sometimes confused with balanced vs. unblanced, but not the same thing is signal level. A lot of pro gear runs at +4db signal level and a lot of consumer gear runs at -10db signal level. Because historically pro gear = balanced and consumer gear = unbalanced, there is a misconception that balanced and unbalanced connections run at different signal levels.

That may confuse things even more, but I'd be less concenered with balanced vs. unblanced than with the +4db vs -10db signal path

Thank you soo much for clearing things up and explaining things!!! Much appreciated

                      Re: Balanced and Unbalanced???????

I just looked the BBE runs at -10db and the 2101 says it outputs line level (which can mean either +4 or -10 depending on whose definition of line level you use)

Bottom line, you can hook them up, it won't damage anything, you just may have to play with the input/output on the BBE and the send retun on the Digitech so that you have unity gain.

The BBE 422A will only work where there is a higher amount of voltage. Meaning, it will work after an effect or in an effects loop ,but, will not work with the input coming straight from the guitar.-Lou

yeah so the correct setup would be...
                            Guitar - Digitech 2101 - BBE - Amp - Speakers right?

                              Yes, or

                              Gtr -> 2101 -(efx loop out)-> BBE -(efx loop in) -> 2101 -> amp.

You just have to decide if the BBE sound better after the preamp, or in the effects loop of the preamp.
