Sovtek MIG-50 Head

Ive been thinking about getting a JCM 800, just because I really love that hard crunch.

But I played a Sovtek (MIG?)-50 today, and I thought it was GREAT! To my ears, it was very marshally, and it was only $350.

Only problem with it was that the volume (II) knob was broken. . . . . in the dimed position [img]/images/graemlins/headbang.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

I could replace the pot, I think (if its mounted to the board, I may have trouble)

I would like to hear some opinions about these amps.

If it sounds good to you, buy it. The volume pot shouldn't be a big deal, even if it is mounted to the board. You just need a solder vacuum, or some solder braid to suck off all the solder to get it off.

Its not board mounted. Sovtek amps only have a few weaknesses.

The pots and jacks are low quality. The good news is that they are easily replaced. That amp is based on the Plexi.
I agree.. they sound really good.

I have the middle child of the sovtek family, the Mig 60, it caught fire at a show once when i was 16 and my cousin is an electrical engineer and he fixed it for me and replaced the burnt up parts, and it sounds awesome. i usually crank it to ten and throw a distortion pedal at it. for what they are they are great amps.

NOT board mounted? YES!

If I did buy it, I think Id' change all the pots, switches, and jacks. The plastic switches bothered me a little. But if I bought some switchcraft pots, jacks, and switches, I dont think Id have any problems with it, just make sure it gets some air (so it wont catch fire [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] )

Ive got a studio going up really soon, and Im collecting amps so I can have a variety of tones at my fingertips. Besides the awesome powerful Marshally tone, its insanely small for what it is.

My JSX and my Laney AOR are both 100 watt 50 pound balls of all tube fury the size of my whole back seat, and this thing is like, I dunnno, 20 lbs and a foot wide. CRAZY! I have to prop my Laney on my shoulder because I dont trust the 20 year old strap with the 50 pound load [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]

It would make a perfect gigging amp too, especially for small quick gigs where you gotta set up quick and leave quick.

I have heard these are great heads to have modded. I know someone that had Cameron mod one and it sounds unreal. I am thinking about buying the mig 100h and getting it all done up. How can you go wrong? If you get one for about $300 to $500 and then another $500 for the mod your getting a great buy.
