• Marshall JMP 1 pre amp

Right, I'm considering selling my Ashdown and getting one of these babies with a VS8008 power amp and a custom made cab...

I play a Fender Lite Ash Strat (with custom pickups) and I'm just wondering if I should really go for a JMP.

Style is hard rock (Gilbert, Guns, Rhoads etc) and I'm looking for something that will sing, grind and sparkle all at once. I'm hoping the JMP can do this

Andy!

i use the preamp for rehearsals, and it's quite nice. crushes the jcm2000 and jcm900 series, and is surprisinly close to the jcm800 if dialed in right. very versatile too. won't do the uber modern chugga chugga stuff, but anything more oldschool won't be a problem.
just, please, don't get that piece of garbage poweramp. get something tube, really. if you don't have a lot of cash, go for peavey classic power amps, or the 20/20 marshall - as you're in england mesa isn't an option, eh?

but then again, if you don't need the versality a midi preamp gives you, why not just get a jcm800 and a couple of pedals? instant 80s tone.

Hmmm, so a JCM800 would be easier etc etc...

But the prices! I hope they are worth it!

yeah, definitely get rid of the SS power amp though, otherwise the JMP-1 will sound pretty flat and lifeless. There isn't really any alternative pre amps worth the money in the UK, as you're looking at £200 for a JMP-1 vs. £600+ for just about anything else (just for those in the US that are about to say the JMP-1 is overpriced and over-rated! heheh).

Re: Marshall JMP 1 pre amp

let me tell ya a story ..I had a bakers dozen of JCM 800s...2203 2204 2205 2210..ans etc..

my faves were the 2210 just as I explained on the JCM 800 thread...why because they added a diode to crunch shit up...it sounded great to me..they were by FAR my favorite marshalls right outta the box...you need no stomps in the front...the diode takes care of that...I like it better than any noisy stomps..and I tried them all..the best of them...ts9s , od-1 , sd-1s and all kinds of shit..

well I love Criss Oliva and old EVH tone/ that was the tone I always gravitate to..so with that in mind..

I had TWO MINT 2210s , and when they first came out with that golden Marshall Rack monoblock 9200 ..mine was the first series with w 5881 / the JMP-1 and JFX-1 ..i was in Cris Oliva heaven ...it sounded just like those heads but in stereo and smoother and livelier...call it process if you will but it had to be mine...I was floored..

so the JMP-1 is here to stay...forever...if you like Glen Drover / EVH or criss Olivas tone this amp will be the closest thing you can get to it...I tried them all..

It has NEVER failed me for 11 years now ..the lead tones are the best in my book....the crunch is there for the 80's shred stuff it is perfect ...for more modern girth and heavieness I have the Uber for that..

same thing in the new GW..in the back section...Mushook of Staind switches beteen that Marshall rack set up I have and a Deizel....Now I know why..

all these heavy girthy boutique amps have that pure , tube brutality but seem to lack that singing sweet lead tones of dudes..like Olivas ' Drovers..and old Eddies..

well that's the deal...

I will NEVER part with it...I recored my demo on a tape recorder...with a vocal mike and everyone that heard my JMP-1 said it sounds like Dime's tone or close to it...nothing but complemenets ..with my 535Q...so I go with what I know..

I know my Uber , John's gear , a Deizel , Framus , Engl or whatever is NOT going to give me that tone ...not like that so I use it for what it is made to do best....those kinds of leads!

and that is why Jesus Christ or Satan could't pry it from my dead hands...It is my favorite preamp...by far...in it's class range...yeah the sansamps sounds like overdriven fuzz to me and it sound fine when John had ro make do with it but I hated it..and the voodoo valve is darker and has more gain...but doesn't nearly sound like a Marshall at all...doesn't have that "livelines" to it or definition..the voodoovalve is dead sounding and somewhat lame to me...it'll do the job...but I would NEVER consider trading it for the likes the JMP-1 ...it has that AUTHENTIC Marshall tone...and that's a good thing with me...because I love a great Marshall tone..and no other preamp that I know of has that.

if you love the sound of a two JCM800s 2210s in stereo but even smoother...you can't go wrong with the JMP-1...

unless your a nu metal spooger who prefer the muddy fuzzyness of a recto..or even worse a POD...

and the best thing about the JMP-1 it's cosistant...set and forget...instead of spending hours "tweaking"...you could spend it writing and playing and that to me is what it all about.

I will say this about the price....new they are overpriced...but if you can score a nice used one for a third of the new cost ...go for it..

If you want to hear the lead tone recorded prety badly , but still conveys what it can do ...I have that demo somwhere....let it speak for itself..

nobody bitched...on the contary ...some of you may remember it sounded pretty fuggin' good...all dry JMP-1 ans a 535Q..

yeah...I'm gona give that up ....yeahhh RIGHT!

well listen to my poorly recorded demo...all I can say...it sounds killer...I need to say nothing more...it works....that's what counts ...if it works for you and you can play your BEST with it...that's a good amp...it is serving it's purpose...even a POD / DSL

Doug Aldrich SMOKED with a DSL ...how I don't know...but he did...so to him that is a good amp...it served his purpose without compromising anything...he shredded...just did his thing...and what else can you say..

I hate dsl's,,,but when he played them...he sounded like Doug Aldrich...like he always sounded...

I played a Carvin Vai amp and couldn't belive he used them...but he does...and he smokes my ass...so who in the hell am "I" to say otherwise..
