  • 5150 use diode clipping?

i tried to search and couldnt find an answer. it seems like with so many tubes it wouldnt need it, but the gain is just so crazy. i was wondering if the 5150 or 5150 II used diode clipping or if it is actual all tube distortion.

The 5150 doesn't use any diode clipping. It's all tube.

I stand corrected. The not yet released Marshall ELVH 5150 uses clipping diodes but not the 5150. I guess the 6 stages of gain eliminate the need for clipping diodes.

Oh my god, an upcoming Marshall EVH sig?

Good lord, I'll start scrounging pennies right now.

Where did you here about the Evh Marshall?
I thought it was just rumours a while ago...
            Any info about the amp?

I heard from a reliable source that it is a go. That is one of the reasons EVH left Peavey.

You know what that means, a amp that will be probaly be at least $2000 with diode clipping that does not sound as good as the peavey 5150. Please Eddie for the love of music do not let them put in diode clipping!

and i take it the 5150 II doesnt either, just more tube distortion?

I have never heard that the 5150 II has more tube distortion. The band I am in has 2 of them. Both the 5150 block letter and the 5150II. The guitarist prefers the block letter 5150. I believe the 5150II has a better clean channel but I have never heard that it has more gain. At least the one in our rehearsal space doesn't.

Go by how the amp sounds, not whether or not it has a diode clipping circuit. Most of your favorite classic tones that are pushed with a diode clipping pedal, for cryin' out loud. I can think of plenty of 'all tube' amps that sound like crap and several great sounding 'diode clipping' amps. Use your ears.

The 5150II doesn't use diodes either. It has less gain than the original. It has an extra tube, but that's for the rhythm channel.

AMEN! When will people learn to judge tone with their ears and not their eyes and spec sheets?

seems to be some controversy on the marshall/evh thing
