I picked up a bunch of low-gain preamp tubes like 5963 and 6189s. I'm wondering...if I stuck these in the pre-amp slots of my Laney AOR 100 head, could I then crank the volume to get output tube distortion at a more reasonable volume? Think I'd be able to get a real distortion as opposed to just a bit of crunch?

Re: Low-gain pre-amp tubes
Using low gain preamp tubes would allow you to "notice" more of the output tubes distortion at high volumes as the preamp tubes wouldn't be distorting as much, thus allowing you to actually hear more of what the outputs were sounding like when they "did" distort.
But, the volume at which the output tube would distort, would still be the same as it always was.

Wouldn't turning the gain down have the same effect?
