After you factor in the cost of the wood, tolex, corners, grill material, piping, casters, speakers, backplate, jacks, wiring and labor I think its much cheaper to just buy one already made.
Buy used... I see beat up Marshalls in my neck of the woods for $300-$400. If you're gigging, no sense in buying a nice neat new 4x12 unless you have roadcases to put them in... they WILL get beat up. Trust me on this.
Its not so much that I dont want to buy a used one, its that there are hardly any for sale near me, and obviously they cant post them. For cost of parts, well labour would be me and my mate doing it, so that would be free.
My mate would also do the wiring. Wood, covering, grille material and backplate material I can get for nothing (contacts )
So basically Id be buying speakers, castors and jacks.
How much are the speakers? like £70/$120 or something? It might not be that cost effective after all
It depends. Madison Speakers make a very decent copy of the Celestion G12K85 which can be had dirt-ass-cheap. I used them in the cab that I built and it sounds identical to my Peavey Butcher cab with the real things.
Most homemade cabs are pretty craptacular, at least the ones that I've seen. You'll save money if you look around and buy a quality cab used. A good cab can make a good amp sound great: A shitty cab can ruin a great guitar sound.
