twister... what are your thoughts on running a 60watt pioneer speaker thru my avt20. i've seen them online for about $30.00. would that improve the sound?

          http://www.loudspeaker.co.uk/ is good for speakers, vintage 30 £50, G12T 75 £38...

I'd recommend building your own, unless you can find a good ply cab 2nd hand, which isn't easy as even 2nd hand cabs (decent ones) I've seen go for £250- £300 +, whereas you should be able to make one for £160-£200 or less, especially if you already have fittings...

If they WERE Chinese, would you instantly sell that cab out of principle, Ron? Or would you keep it and live with the "dirty" feeling? Enquiring minds want to know!

James, does your friend have all the power tools necessary to cut and assemble the pieces of a 412 cab? You need a half-decent woodshop to do it right. If I were you I'd cast my net nationwide (UK's not that big anyway) and resign yourself to paying freight or talking a friend with a car into making a roadtrip to pick it up. Again, you'll spend nearly as much buying the components and if you don't assemble it well you could get rattles and other unmusical sounds out of it. If your bud's a master woodworker it's one thing, but if he built a table in shop class, well...

you can buy celestions direct from carvin for less than 110. i got mine before the move to china

Yep, Carvin's got the V30s and G12T-75s. Personally, I think a mixture of the V30 and G12T75 is great, they blend very well together. The V30 by itself is a little too midrangey and can sometimes be harsh, and the G12T75 has some scooped mids.

Well, to be fair you don't have to be a master woodworker, you just have to have a little skill, and know how to read a tape. I built one for fucks sake, how hard can it be?

You're probably better off getting one of these compact, lightweight Crate cabs and changing the speakers. Though, the St. Louis Music/Crate speakers are pretty good. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/487711/

Well, true, Zeegler, but my point is, if you're not sure about your bud's skills, it would sure suck to spend the money, build the cab and it rattles, hums or otherwise sounds like crap due to poor construction. You would've spent nearly as much as buying a used cab and have an albatross. If it worked out for you though, that's awesome. Again, if the guy's experience is building a table or chair in shop class, I'd think twice. It's not like luthiery but it does take some skill.

I haven't heard yours... but I know that any used marshall is going to sound at least ok. Not slamming your efforts, but you have to realize that some people can't even cut a board straight. I've heard homemade cabs that had all sorts of weird resonances, rattles and certain frequencies that peaked, even with good speakers installed.

Hell, if you want new, buy an avatar unloaded and fill it with your used ebay speakers of choice. Or Carvin had (has?) a celestion knockoff for around $20ish each.

Plus most home-built cabs that I've seen had tolex jobs that made frankenstein look like a male model.

I agree on its probably easier buying a used cab.

There is more to a great sounding 4x12 than just the speakers that are inside of it. Cab construction and materials used are equally important.

Go into a music store, buy a Marshall 4x12 and you will never need to by another Cabinet
