• Pick an amp

We're adding a 2nd guitarist. We have a good selection of amps. We play small/med clubs & specialize in hard rock. What would you use? We're not adding a second to be the next "RacerX". Looking to add depth a double thickness of our sound.

1. Marshall JCM-900 50-watt dual rev head, 1960a 412
2. Peavey VTM-60, 1960a 412
3. Mesa Boogie Triple recto, Rect 412
4. Peavey XXX 212 combo
5. Peavey 5150 212 combo

i'd go for a boogie single rec or at most a dual rec. and rec cab.

the triple is just too much amp for club gigs. especially if you are only running 1 cab.

I'd probably use a XXX for the versatility. Although it's not identical to either a Marshall or Mesa, it can get reasonably close to both. When you say you have a good selection, do you own the above amps, or would be able to get what you need easily?

I would go with the Marshall.

We have access to all the listed amps. I play a rack with VHT 2-90-2, modded Rockmaster, G-Major, 5150A 412. The guy owns the XXX and obviously he's used to it. I'd like to hear it fatter through a cab.

In that case, how about the XXX with a Genz-Benz G-Flex 2x12 cab?

I know alot of guys flame the JCM900's but I dig the 50 watters. I have played through several of them and they were all good. One thing about a Marshall... It will certainly fatten up your sound in a 2 guitar band.

dude, you got a vht poweramp! i'd rather have that than any of the above listed amps. your preamp is not bad either. if you are not happy with your sound i would look into another preamp. or possibly a new cabinet would fix your tone issues. what are some artitst that you would like to sound similar to? then we could better assist you in finding the right componets for you tone quest.

Hold on - This is not about my tone or equipment. We're trying to get the new guitarist to sound better.

Oh ok, I was wondering about that. Well if all 5 of these amps are available, I would have him do a band practice with each one then decide.

I'd say go with a 5150. While you might not like the sound of it alone (I actually love it, though), it'll sit PERFECTLY in a band mix.

I like the idea of try 'em all. Now I hope I can convince him to test drive these w/o him taking offense to his equipment or sound. Our goal is to get the BEST possible sound with what we've got on hand. If any of these amps sound fatter than my rig, I'll set mine aside and use it.
