  • Suggest good boosts!

Ah but NOW it's different, because I HAVE the amp that needs boosting
It has a lot of gain and a great sound. I want more gain, and to keep this sound. Tight bass, no midscoop, trebly more than bassy.

I have a little list...Of course the cheaper the better, as my amp (Laney AOR pro tube 30) is 15 years old and can't be found in shop, so I can't try the pedals with it...
    Boss SD1
    Zakk Wylde OD
FullTone Fat boost (in my dreams)
Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde (My dream. If I sell the drum kit soon enough, I'll go for that, almost sure)
MXR Microamp (though from what I heard, it's not great, but it seems like an easy pedal to start up building your own, so I'll try that)
    Seymour Duncan pup booster.

The pup booster seems to be the cheapest and the best: real clean boost, up to 20 db... I'm just worried it'll be the exact same as the MXR microamp.

Anyhoo to all of you who use boosts and have experience with Marshall JCM800 type amps, suggest away Thanks!

Ibanez tube screamers are a possible to add to the list. Those and the SD-1s with Marshall 800s were pretty much the Bay Area Thrash sound...

I really want to try out the MXR Wylde it looks great, but yeah tube screamers are a possibility. bring your amp to the shop, usually they allow you to play with your stuff anyways.

The pup booster and microamp probably wont give you alot more gain simply because its meant for single coils and such to give it a lil more "umph"

The Zakk Wylde is not high gain. It's almost the same circuit as his Boss OD. My board had 13 pedals on it at one point, all boutique 'must haves' (yeah, right...). My favorite boost is now the new MXR 6 band EQ. It makes a sleeping lion growl at low volumes.

Maxon OD Series. Whatever fits your budget between 9 and 820.

DOD Juice Box... it's discontinued, but they can be found on ebay for cheap, and it's an awesome pedal, made to be used in front of an already distorted amp. Or check out the new Digitech Bad Monkey... it's rumored to be the Juice Box reincarnated.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed with the Zak pedal myself, but I have too much available gain in my rig to appreciate an overdrive I guess..

My buddy in Mushroomhead loves his though...

                I'll second that!

Nice, great quality, and low noise.

                  Re: Suggest good boosts!

Ahhhh screw that... I decided to wait until the drum kit was sold to start on the guitar building project.
Which means I have about...150 to 200 euros for one or 2 pedals. If I chose 2 pedals, one will be a boost, the other a distortion. If I chose one, it'd be a boost, or both.
I really like the Jekyll and Hyde, but I feel that SD1/Bad Monkey + Turbo Rat will serve me better, though I don't know if the Rat has enough gain. If I got the Maxon OD too, I'd probably get a great sound but that's 150 by itself :s

                  So I could do:
                  SD1 + Distortion
                  Bad Monkey + Distortion
In Distortions, it could be the Turbo Rat, or anything under 100 euros... I don't have many ideas.
                  Or
                  Jekyll and Hyde
                  Maxon OD9/OD808

The SD Pickup Booster is also available as an onboard preamp (9v). Got one in my 750xl. Works great...

Eh my guitar already has a midboost, the electronics cavity is full :P And I also hear that it wouldn't boost the amp enough, as it's meant more as a 'turn a Single Coil into a humbucker' type of boost.
