I actually have been pretty good with keeping some things lately. I have had the 5150II for almost 2 years now.
All of my amps with the exception of the Fender Ultra Chorus are all tube amps.
My favorite is the Mark III live and the X60 for home use. Throw a Boss OD3 in front of my X60 and you will truly be in 80's metal heaven. Its the closest tone to Ratt I have ever gotten. I love that amp.
I bought the 5150II for a band I was in as a back up a few years ago and never actually used it until the last several weeks. I have been using it to power my GT-6 for band practice but I am now using it straight up with my pedal board in the loop and an amp switcher going to an acoustic simulator direct to the board.
My current amp list as follows:
Mesa Boogie Mark III Head
Carvin X100B Head
Carvin XV112E 1 x 12 combo
Carvin X60 1 x 12 combo
Carvin T100 power amp / Boss GT-6 modeler/processor rack system.
Fender Ultra Chorus 2 x 12 combo
Peavey 5150II head
Peavey 5150 Mk2 head (I am picking it up tonight)
Randall 2 x 12 slant cab loaded with Altec Lansings
Randall 2 x 12 slant cabinet loaded with Celestion 50w
Mesa Boogie 3/4 back 1 x 12 cabinet with 90w Black Shadow
Peavey 5150 4 x 12 cabinet loaded with Sheffields

1986 Carvin V220
1989 Carvin DC127
1991 PRS CE24
2002 PRS Santana SE
1992 Jackson Rhoads EX Pro
(I am running pretty low on guitars lately!! I like owning lots of amplifiers much better than guitars)
I also have alot of keyboard and synth stuff.

I am in two bands but we dont gig, both bands needs a singer. But i am on a ever constant tone search, actually after this morning i might be selling off alot of equiptment and just keeping a few amps.
I read an interview with Robb Flynn (of MachineHead if ya didn't know, wankers ) where he said he preferred the very earliest 5150 (don't know if they are the infamous block lettered ones) because they had a bigger power supply than the later ones...That's a very reasonable explanation for them having more punch/headroom than later ones I think, speaking out of experience with hi-fi amps at least....
"i wonder if you could post a detailed comparison of the 5150 (I) and your mk III head? that would rule"
I can do that..I used to combine them both ala a/b box..I actualy had a custom splitter/switcher so I could run five amps at a time..which I did...ask Cleveland
I used to like the tone I got when running my favorite 5150 and My Boogie MRK III..they sounded Massive together..I dioaled both amps to my liking and ran them together..
When I used to switch back and forth between the two with a click of the button...I always gravitated toward the 5150..it had a thicker , tighter , oomph to it..This was before I discovered the awesome powers of a BBE 422 with a 5150..The MRK III was very nice I used to get a Gary Moore "Cooridors of Power" tone from it..but it was a bit saggy for me..that was the only thing I didn't care for..this was around 91 and didn't know much at the time about trying different tubes and such..wish I still had it..my I specifically remember like the 5150 much better than the MRK III to my ears and for my style...that's why I bought four more...but none were as cool as my first.
Not completely happy with the Mrk III I reluctantly traded it for a brand new Charvel 750 XL artchtop Silverflake..
Now I had Five 5150's all with the stock Sylvanias..three block letters and two script..the only one that was way different was the first block letter one I bought in 91..it had a different feel and sound from the other four..it had major mojo..the other four were consistant and the same ..except for this first one I bought..it sounded warmer , smoother , better...for reasons unknown..
Then I combined the 5150 with my brand new Recto and that made me only want my MRK III back big time...so I replaced that with a Soldano HR 100..which was much more to my liking..
at one time (ask John) I had a Ampeg VL100 Lee Jackson / A 2210 Marshall , Soldano HR 100 and my favorite 5150 all running together..all at the same time..it was HUGE..

Yes, I agree with Bill. The Mark III is awesome but it is a bit saggy when A/B'd with the 5150. The 5150 has a tighter bottom but the Mark III has a much nicer midrange tone. For guitar soloing I would go with the Mark III. For palm mute chunk and huge chording I would go with the 5150. Thats why I am using both live. BTW... the clean channel on my newest 5150 (it is one of the last Peavey 5150 runs)is pretty darn good. It's not the best clean I have ever heard but it is totally useable in a rock situation.I would say its good. I don't use it although I would if I had to. I use both 5150 channels heavy. Heavy rhythm and screaming lead. I can get a killer super chunk heavy rhythm and a killer lead tone with the pre-gain on 7 on both channels.
now that's really surprising. i did not expect the 5150 to be tighter sounding than a MK xy....in fact, i thought it was the other way
how would you describe the difference in tone? which amp has more bottom, smoother highs, etc? also, how much of the gain is usable, and which amp has more gain?
i found the 5150 to be a gain MONSTER that has plenty of gain when set on 5 (lead channel), but imho it quickly gets oversaturated and muddy when turned past 6-ish (apparently having a 5150 cab helps). on the other hand, the MK III is said to be limited gain wise as long as you don't turn the treble way up (as the treble is supposed to add gain). does this result in an inevitably bright rhythm tone, or is the graphic eq powerful enough (and using the right frequencies) to cut the boosted treble back to a darker tone?

Ok.. here it goes.
Bottom end: 5150
Smoother highs: Mark III
Better midrange: Mark III
More gain: 5150 although anything past 7 is just basically adding compression and noise.
Quietness: Mark III by a longshot. Its dead quiet.
Volume: I would say even
Bedroom volume tone: even
Decent volume tonee: 5150
Loud volume tone: Mark III
Sick crazy insane loud tone: Mark III
The Mark III stays focused at low volume and tightens up the louder you push it. The 5150 is completely the opposite. It is also focused at low volume but it gets more loose as you turn it up loud.
Ability to cut through a mix: Dead even.
Tweakability and versatility: Mark III
Ease of use: 5150. Heck, its a no brainer.
NOW THE IMPORTANT STUFF!!
Lead tone: Mark III
Rhythm tone: 5150
Clean tone: 5150. Its easier to use. Its fairly difficult to dial in a good clean tone on the Mark III and still maintain a good rhythm and lead tone.
The best way to get a good clean channel on both of these amps is to roll your volume down off of your rhythm channel. They both clean up nicely. This way you can have 2 or 3 heavy channels.
Effects loop: Mark III. Its a better loop.
EQ section: Mark III although the resonance control on the 5150 is VERY handy.
The Mark III has active tone and EQ controls. The 5150's are passive.
Which amp literally rips your face off more (because they both do):
5150
Which amp sounds better while its ripping your face off:
Mark III. It is more refined and the tone is much sweeter. It sounds more "professional" to me. My Mark III has the best tone of any amplifier I have ever heard. As you turn it up the tone gets better and more pleasing to the ear. As you turn up the 5150 you begin to see things falling off of the shelves and people running for cover.
Genres:
Blues: Mark III
Pop: Mark III
Classic rock: Even
Early 80's metal: Mark III
Late 80's metal: Even
Early 90's metal: Even
Late 90's metal: 5150
Todays metal: 5150
Are you a lead player or a rhythm player? If so... what amp would I recommend.
As a mainly rhythm player I'm gonna have to pitch in here. I personally worship the rhythm tone that comes out of a Mk III red stripe. Since I tested the green stripe I went to another seller and tested a red stripe combo (hardwoord/ev/EQ/reverb/the works!).
I spent 7 minutes (I remember checking my watch ) dialing and tweaking, I hit my first E5 AND BOOM can you say intro to Master Of Puppets? To a 'T'.
What amazed me the most is that I could dial into the KEA or RTL sound, which is a supersweet Marshall sound, but it had better bottom and low end and was a little tighter overall.
So I guess that confirms what you say: 80's metal: Mk III.
And since I don't play any ultra-high-gain stuff like you hear today, this rhythm player will keep worshipping at the Mk III altar 'till he finally acquires one!
-------------
Thanks for the comparison !!!!!
WOW....gold star for jgcable. thanks a LOT, this was REALLY helpful and an interesting read.
by the way, ATM i'm only the rhyhtm player, but we're going to start trading solos on the next record (the former guitar player was a rhythm only guy, so for the older stuff the lead guitar player would do all the leads, and we decided to keep it like that when playing the old stuff)
Yeah..John I must say that was quite spot on..
Let me add that the MRKIII did NOT accept the BBE very well..not at all.
But there is no amp that I've owned that LOVES the BBE more than a 5150..and it does kick it in the ass as far as tightness , even MORE low end and definition..
My Uber HATES the BBE...HATES it..of course I tried it.
