My stereo setup of a Fender Metal Head and a Marshall Mode 4 will kill anything you have.

maybe.......but thats the point.....we could do this till the cows come home...to your ears...... yes....but thats why your you and I'm me.......its all subjective.
And I know you didnt pay 299.00 for a Mode 4 which is my point. To me it dont sound thousands of dollars better.
I know what kinda sound I can get out of what I own.
I own Marshall cabinets that to me are what really makes your sound. From 1970s and early 1980s
I've tried all kinds of heads with these cabinets
And to my ears 200.00 to 2,000.00 heads dont really sound that different. Also the Clean channels on the S.S amps sound better then the tube heads.
again my .02 wacky as it sounds

Wooooosh.... That's the sound of my post going right over your head. I was kidding around man. Illustrating the point you just made! Tone is subjective.

I know plenty of people that have cheap-o amps and they think they sound awesome, but at the same time to me they sound terrible. Conversely, they think my rig doesn't sound that good. Everyone will believe that their own rig sounds awesome, that's just how it works! Tone is subjective. You like Jimi Hendrix's tone, but I might like EVH's or John Smith who plays in some drop Z nu metal band. It all boils down to what tone is your ideal tone and what the application of said tone is. Your Marshalls might kill for your music, but for playing ska they might not work, or death metal or grind, or whatever!

And to clarify, I do not like the tone of the Mode Four or Fender Metalhead!

Are you saying John Petrucci can not dial in a good tone?

hehehehehehehehehee first off the only point I'm making is
exactly what you stated all subjective, cept the price of some amps.
2,000.00 for an amp head to me is just wrong
To me I really think its the Cabinets that play the bigger part in how an amp sounds

Also to me John Petrucci is an amazing guitarist
As far as his tone, I don't like it, too compressed or processed for me.

Hendix's Machine Gun tone is more what I call "tone"
Also I was saying Hendrix used a Fuzz Face not a 10,000.00 rack My biggest point

I play a 150W tube amp, and it sounds pretty good. It's about being snobby to the sound guy saying, "you've got this to work with, deal asshole".

Well good for you.....
I've owned 6 Marshall JCM 800 heads and 6 Marshall basket weave cabinets that would smoke anything you can come up with........and have used them in live settings that dictated using them.......that wasnt my point. My point is for the price I get as good a sound with what I have for 1,000.00 less
And thats a Fact!!!!!
Did Dime Bags sound suck? geee he used S.S amps from what I remember

[/ QUOTE ]

Without knowing me, you probably shouldn't think you could smoke anything I could come up with.

I respect your opinion, and I would hope you could respect mine.

Anytime I come up with a hot spot that is "too" bad, I will turn the cab to face the drummer, or face the back wall (disperses the sound, a little more evenly in the front, as it bounces).

Re: Best brand new overall amp for metal LIVE!!

what the hell, I'll play I'm putting several in each category because tone is subjective. These are good starting points. These are amps with the 'goods' without any pedals, and run the gamut from single channel no frills to multi-channel god help you if it breaks down midi wonders. All are heads, I think combos aren't real great for metal. All are used also, I think you lose too much value buying any gear new.

0-$499 - Peavey Ultra Plus
$500-$999 - 5150, 5150 II, JSX, XXX, mesa single recto, rectoverb, Soldano HR series, Mesa Mk III, HD147, Vetta
$1k-$1.5k - dual recto 2 channel, triple recto 2 channel, dual recto rackmount, VHT 50/CL, Avenger, Voodoo modded Marshall (I owned a 2203 that KILLED)
$1.5k-$2k - VHT UL, SLO, Uber
$2k + haven't really played any amps in this range that I'd recommend. I've heard great stuff about Herbert though.
I know I listed more amps than not, but I think any of the above could do metal and work well. I didn't list any stock marshalls because the old ones needed boost pedals or mods, and the only modded marshalls that I've owned were voodoo modded. I'm not a big fan of the TSL/DSL tone either. Not a big ENGL powerball fan either, and XTC/Shivas are great amps, but I don't think metal when I hear them. At least without a boost.

Flame away!

3 Full Stacks in the wrong hands are gonna sound like crap. Which is my point
If your tellin me a 400.00 amp can't sound good I'll say your on Crack
and if your tellin me just cause is says Bogner its gonna be great I'll say your on Crack again

Yea, I really started a pile of shit with this topic. Maybe the admins should banned ass me for it. I just thought it would be helpful and of course.. its turned into a shit storm.
Remember boys and girls... I am not asking if your amp is better then mine. I am asking this:
If you have an amp that you use for metal live and you like it and it falls into one of the above categories... let me know. I will compile a list and we will see if there are any certain amps that are universally popular for all kinds of metal. For instance... if 20 players who play every style of metal imaginable all use 5150's and love them it will show that the 5150 is more versatile for metal than many would believe. On the flipside, if 20 players use 5150's but they all do nu-metal it would show that the amp is more tailored for a modern metal sound.

Yeah, but you're assuming, or at least that's what it comes off as, we're not capable of making those stacks sound good or better than your cheap(er) gear.

Ehh, I used a fender twin head for years for metal. Is it a metal amp? Nope.

I'm currently using a Bradshaw CAE3+se preamp for pretty brutal heavy metal. Is it a hardcore preamp? Nope. Steve Lukather uses it! It's a "pretty" sounding preamp. But not the way I'm running it.

Hard to pin anything. I'll make what I can work if I have to.

You need to reread my initial post. I am only interested in amp heads that can do metal (whatever you want to consider metal, I think we all have an idea of what basic metal is). You may have used a Fender Twin for metal but surely you had a pedal in front of it. My topic pertains to amps that don't need any outboard help.
