Very cool comparison guys. At most of the ampfests I've been in, it's been more of a 'cork sniffer' thing going on. I like the idea of amps that are more easily attainable at these things.

Wish ya had a JSX there, I think it would have hung pretty well.

I have only been involved with a few amp fests. Usually they were high end unobtainable by me kind of amps. This was the first "common man" shootout. The other cool thing was we were able to REALLY crank these amps up. Its pretty interesting how amps change when you REALLY start getting on them. We found that the Mesa's were the amps that the best sound at super extreme volume. They REALLY tighten up. The 5150, JCM800 and the Legacy did the opposite but not to the point of sounding bad.

Still, to me, the best sounding brand of amp to me is Matchless. Unfortunately, I have never had the pleasure of playing through one. One day I will sell most of my amps and buy one. A Matchless and a SLO and I am good to go forever.

That surprises me on the Matchless... figured they were a lot cleaner than what you'd like.

I play with as minimal gain as I can get away with even though I mainly use high gain amps. It surprises other guitar players when they play my rig. Maybe its just my old ears.. but I tend to lose "my sound" if I have too much gain. I was completely the opposite in the old days.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I use 6L6 in the Legacy. It gives the amp a bit more "thump" I guess you could call it...

This thread is great for two reasons.

            1) Nice amp shootout. It reminds me that I want both a Legacy and an Uberschall.

            and...

            2) It reminded me of one of my favorite Aerosmith tunes - "My Fist Your Face" - all together sing the third line of the song for Siggy.

            Hey Hippie,

I am the same way, on my high gain amps i keep the gain about 60%, on my marshall 2204's full maxed with a OD pedal in front.

And I appreciate your help. Did I not put enough smileys on the post for you? Or is nobody allowed to have fun with Siggy?

BTW, did you read the third line of the song? - I think it's perfect for you and Bill arguing.

I'm actually the same way... BUT strangely, I seem to do best with high gain amps that aren't "dimed". I like the aggression they seem to provide. But they are too loose and fuzzy/farty when the preamp distortion is up too high, it just loses definition and dynamics. I can't play the fast stuff I like with a MESA at the tonal setting I like, it just flubs up.

The distortion I seem happiest with, is a Vanhalen 1 sound on steroids.

The way I basically get it, is to slam the front end of a high gain tube amp with a clean preamp (EMG- PA-2), and keep the preamp gain backed off. I use my CAE at roughly 4-6 on a 1-10 dial. 4 being tight and low distortion like a hot Marshall, and 6 being more thicker and MESA like

This gives me a tight, lower distortion, type of sound. With a lot of aggressive edge, control and dynamics.

I have played the Uber at length, and probably wouldn't own one for the price... I definitely wouldn't own a MESA, as "I" just can't get the 'sound" outta them. They both have gobs of gain and sound good for slower longer low end sustained notes, but get too loose to get the quick staccato low end notes that I like to use in what I do and still keep the definition I want.

I know about a time for joking, but this is not the case for joking, i have just had enough, like i said i lost all respect and all joking matters when i was informed that bill PM'd people asking them to dog me. My sense of humor is not at top form today because i have had enough with this crap. Bill puts smileys in his remarks too, and well i am not gonna go any further on this subject. Lets just say i have had one person contact me supporting me, and i am sure there are more but they are just afraid to speak up.

Cleveland - have you tried a VHT or ENGL? I prefer the VHT of the two, but either might really be up your alley. The VHT has that tightness but still sounds like a tube amp, the ENGL... well, I don't think they sound like a tube amp.

There, I'll get everyone flaming me now.

Cool shootout. I'm going to be in the market for a new amp soon, so this helps. Something "Marshallish"...

BTW, Rectos are great amps, you just need to take the time to dial them in. They can be mushy and lack definition without mids. If you crank the mids, the amp will be focused and tight, trust me. Adding a OD in front helps too... Of course you'll have to turn the onboard gain down. I have it set at 5 - 6 on the Vintage voicing (single rec).

engl amps (to me, at least) tend to sound great at low volume, but sterile at gig volume.
