      A lot of people probably don't realize that those Marshalls are about as loud as they get with the master on 4. Beyond that you are pretty much just clipping the power tubes and adding distortion and compression. It doesn't eally get much louder.

        I still hear a noticable increase in volume between 4-7 on mine. They pretty much just start coming to life around 4 tho. After 7 tho..I would say you're not getting much more volume wise out of these.

          Master 4 Preamps 8
          all 3 Heads
          And with ODs and EQs pumping these amps got louder

                StarRider would be the bane of Seattle's soundmen... I get whined at by soundmen around here when I run a 5150 halfstack at 2 (and I do band practice at about 3 or 4!)

                    Back in the old days alot of small clubs/bars did not have PA's or wimpy PA's compared to today. Like i said great way to increase the volume of your amp is turn the cab backwards so the sound is not hitting the audience.

                      in Detroit scene in the late 80's it was common for bands to blow the roofs off clubs. There was a lot of local bands that were great bands, there was competition not only for being thebest band in town, but being the loudest in town too. I personally brought 2-4 heads and 4-6 4x12's if the'd fit on stage [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] That is why today just the visual of a dude walking up on stage with a 1x12 combo is funny to me, sure its enough but still.

                      Part of a guitar players craft is total sound, not just your guitar tone and amp, you have to know live sound well enough to work effectively with whoever is running sound. If you don't know your shit and have a good rapport with your soundman, you will not sound the way YOU want to. Not knowing live sound is sorta like saying your an excellent guitarist but you only know how to use 3 strings [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

                        As far as I can tell the hearing hasn't sufered too much [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

                        Also I hope we all know I'm talking bout back in the day
                        not today. The clubs back in the day had some really loud and big PAs
                        The biggest PA we ever played thru was at a show we did
                        The Company who supplied the PA was called Rock Systems if I'm corrrect
                        A place called L'Mours in Queens Long Island
                        It was a July 4th Show in 85' if I remember
                        Bands included:
                        Loudness
                        Savatage
                        Keel
                        And a few other local bands during the day
                        We where the 1st band to go on at night
                        Right before Savatage
                        We used4 Full Stacks!!!!! at this show
                        Had to keep up with the Jones, so to speak [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]
                        I think I still have some photos of us from this show somwhere too

                          I had all that stuff on stage too, but never ran more than the two outside bottom cabs. It was all show...and it was impressive.
                          When someone pays their $5 at the door, then walks in and glances at the stage and see's all those Marshall cabs, Ampeg cabs and a monster drum kit sandwiched in between, they realize this ain't amature hour, and they are gonna get their money's worth! You've already won most of them over and haven't played a note yet! That was the point.

                            L'amours Queens and Brooklyn... played them both. GREAT gigs. The biggest gig I ever did was an outdoor festival at Pelham Bay Park, NY. We opened for Steeplechase who opened for Zebra. 5000 people. It was the week when the infamour WAPP Apple radio station switched format from metal to disco. Many of the rock clubs were also switching over to dance clubs. We played this place in New Rochelle called Take Five which had metal on Thursday's and dance on Friday and Saturday. At the outdoor gig I ripped the shit out of WAPP and called them NY's apple gone rotten. My comments made the newspaper.

                              Yup, and alot of bands used Dummy cabs (empty cabs) Some groups today are still doing that, i know Black Label does, I went and saw avril (no harrasment free show and went because i would love to nail her) and her guitarists had 3 halfstack dummy cabs and heads on stage and ran his real rig under the stage.

                              Did i get in avril's pants, yeah like i had a chance, but i have to admit she is a good entertainer and looks great in person too.

                                Beethovens in Davenport IA had a huge house system, one of the largest I've seen and the stage was also so large that if you didn't have a semi worth of gear, you'd look naked with a half stack. Locally we had the Iron Horse (now a boat dealership) Starks (I believe they're country again) The Union, Mr Nibs before it burned down and then turned into a huge club called the Mirage> that was another place where if you didn't have 3 stacks you'd look naked. They had a very nice house sound and light system-the place turned into a disco a few years later on. What it is now I have no idea.
