  • Recording Mics...?

I just bought an Akai DPS24 - only because I got a great deal on it. I'm sure this unit has way more capabilities than I do (I'm at the Tascam 424 level..!). I've got an SM57 and and SM58, but I'm told these may not give good results for vocals or acoustic instruments. Any recommendations for a good mic in the $250 range?

Since you already have 2 good dynamic mics I would buy a cheap entry level condenser as a Studio Project B1.Your budget is enough to buy a Rode NT1 though.Condenser are very sensible mics and should be tried with the kind of vocals that has to be recorded with..

Look at the Audio Technica 4033 used, or one of their other condesers. They will be much better on vocals and acoustic instruments than a 57/58.

look into the RODE condenser mics

they are amazing bang for the buck. the NT1-A or something like that will do a great job for you as long as you have phanto power capabilities.

btw, Matt, the RODE K2 tube mic is simply amazing. i think you would love it in your studio. especially for the price. (i think the dealer price is between 300-500 or something like that.

Cool. Rode is on my list of things to check out. Right now, I've got enough mics, just not enough of everything else...

Somebody recommended a Groove Tubes GT55 or GT66. Anyone have experience with those?

                  Re: Recording Mics...?

                  i have used the alesis/gt AM-52
it was a good mic, very intimate sounding. till it crapped out on me. i haven't tried any of the newer GT mics, but i'm sure they sound pretty good. but the new RODE stuff is a better bang for the buck IMO.
