hey guys,
I've been able to try out a few cool amps while staying in Stockholm, and here's a short review of how my ears heard 'em.
I tried the Dual Recto first, into what was presumably a standard Mesa Recto cab (I'm not in the Boogie know much)
Guitar was a stock Jackson RR5.
Pretty good high-gain metal tone, nice chug for riffing. I liked the tone better for leads though, kinda "muddy" for riffing for my liking. Dialed back on the gain, you could definately nail the AC/DC tone. The clean was pretty nice.
Stilletto had less gain, but it sounded pretty similar. Even better AC/DC and bluesy tone out of that one, I actually preferred it over the dual recto. (because I'd choose neither of 'em for straight out metal)
On to the 5150, into matching cab. Now we're talking metal riff tone!! preamp gain at 5, perfect. above 6, it definately "mushed out" so I can definately hear where Bill is coming from with his constant "422 reminder"
I actually liked the clean tone pretty well, it doesn't have to be "Roland JC-120" for my stuff. It only gets a small minus for being noisy, but a noisegate and the 422 in the loop would likely do wonders to this thing.
alright, onto a different store, Fireball head into ENGL standard cab.
guitar was a Jackson C.O.Wolbers 7-string.
wow, this thing rocks...the best out of these vigilant 4 in my ears...it was similar to the 5150 but with articulation...I guess it stems from both having 6L6's...very nice metal tone, definately my favorite tube amp for metal so far.
It is very unforgiving though, so I'll be forced to improve playing if I buy it
but I dig that. incredible clean sound too, it's not sparkly clean but just a hint of distortion. very dynamic and "alive" sounding...which is why we even bother with tubes IMO
ok, hope that helped some of ya...now if you excuse me, I'll duck before the shit hits the fan
