I'm looking for a cheap heeavy distortion pedal that sounds pretty good on a Marshall MG 30DFX amp (not tube). I'm thinking of getting either a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone, Digitech Metal Master or a Digitech Death Metal. Suggestions?

The MT-2 is the industry standard for heavy metal.

      Re: Pedals

My son had the MG30DFX and ran a Metal Master through it. It kicked some ass considering the amp. In fact, the pedal was able to add some low end thump that the amp itself lacked.

I use the Digitech Death Metal. The bottom end is great, still articulate notes well, doesn't just go to mush. I have heard great stuff about the MT-2 but that you have to really tweak it to get it right.

How do you guys use the distortion?

I normally used the distortion pedals on a clean amp and ODs to push a distorted amp, but have come to the conclusion that that didn't work for my BOSS HM-2. You have to distort the amp and add the distortion on top.

I never did that when I had a DS-1 or Rocktron Rampage and now I wish I had. I probably thought they weren't too great because of that mistake.

Put me down for the BOSS HM-2 and you can't go wrong with the MT-2 for sure!

Dude, I am pratically giving away a DOD Death Metal pedal in the Clasifides with Box and Manual, very good shape, I hardly used it. $25 Shipped. Jack.

I highly recommend the Hughes and Kettner Warp Factor pedal. It's quite affordable too. Very good low end and great boogie-ish sound.

Well, considering my amp is SS with one preamp tube (Marshall AVT150H), I just run the pedal through the clean channel; puts the amps built-in OD channels to shame. An OD pedal wouldn't do too much for me, would it?
