• picking a 212 cab

My cabinet has long been the weak link in my system. It's an old carpet-covered Crate 212 with a pair of Carvin Vintage 30 knock-offs. I occassionally hear a farty crackle.

Anyway, I got to practice about a half-hour early the other night. We share a space with another band, and the other guitarist is pretty cool about sharing gear. So I decided to plug my THD Univalve into his Marshal JCM800 212.

I hit a chord, and it blasted out at nearly double the volume with the same settings. It also had a much more pronounced low end. It could really chug! On the downside, its highs were a bit muted; believe it or not, I had more sustain out of the Crate, and I can also fire off these really awesome pinch harmonics with the Crate. Both are wired for 16 ohms.

I'd really love to find a cab that will get me both that nice low and the defined highs. I was looking at the Avatar site because I hear a lot of good things about them. I like the black tolex with the metal grill, but I have NO IDEA which speakers to pick.

Any thoughts? If there's something other than Avatar you'd recommend, feel free to speak up. I haven't set a budget for it, but if I can get great tone without spending a mint, I'm okay with that!

Extra info, if it helps:
-Charvel Model 4 with Duncan Distortion humbucker
-Tung-Sol RI 6550 output tube, 5751 input, Amperex 12AX7 driver
-I play most of the lead parts in a two-guitar band

the verticle recto 2x12 is my personal favorite cab.
sounds better than most 4x12's and its easy to put in the back of a truck all by yourself

I've always liked the vertical idea, like those old ADA split quarterstack things.

If you want to go the budget route, look for a Peavey 212M. I have one that I've used for recording my band's demo and full-length, through Peavey, Jackson and Rivera amps. It has a pair of Sheffield speakers, and I believe was the "mate" for either the original 5150 combo or possibly the Ultra combo. Nicely balanced sound, and very sturdy. I got mine for around $250.

There are a lot of used Randall and Crate 2x12 cabs floating around that have Celestion V30s in them, either stock or aftermarket, selling for dirt cheap. The cab construction probably isn't much to brag about, but there are certainly some diamonds in the rough.

My Randall MTS cab I picked up for $400 sounds great and is built like a freakin tank. It's got V30's in em, but might swap em out later on for something with a little more highs. Everyone speaks about Avatar cabs, but I've personally never tried em, so couldn't be straight with ya on that, but if they're as good as everyone says (which I don't doubt) and they are great for the price, hell, I say try that

Carvin VE212. Clarity over the whole spectrum. It's a punchy lil sucker
