My cabinet has long been the weak link in my system. It's an old carpet-covered Crate 212 with a pair of Carvin Vintage 30 knock-offs. I occassionally hear a farty crackle.
Anyway, I got to practice about a half-hour early the other night. We share a space with another band, and the other guitarist is pretty cool about sharing gear. So I decided to plug my THD Univalve into his Marshal JCM800 212.
I hit a chord, and it blasted out at nearly double the volume with the same settings. It also had a much more pronounced low end. It could really chug! On the downside, its highs were a bit muted; believe it or not, I had more sustain out of the Crate, and I can also fire off these really awesome pinch harmonics with the Crate. Both are wired for 16 ohms.
I'd really love to find a cab that will get me both that nice low and the defined highs. I was looking at the Avatar site because I hear a lot of good things about them. I like the black tolex with the metal grill, but I have NO IDEA which speakers to pick.
Any thoughts? If there's something other than Avatar you'd recommend, feel free to speak up. I haven't set a budget for it, but if I can get great tone without spending a mint, I'm okay with that!
Extra info, if it helps:
-Charvel Model 4 with Duncan Distortion humbucker
-Tung-Sol RI 6550 output tube, 5751 input, Amperex 12AX7 driver
-I play most of the lead parts in a two-guitar band
