  • What is similar to a Mesa DC-2, DC-3 or .22?

    Guys,

I am buying an amp for a friend and I a am trying to find out what he should buy. He plays diverse styles ranging from soft rock to heavier stuff.

In any case, I was recommending to him one of the small Mesas because they are versatile but I woul like you to tell me what else can do the job... he wants tubes.

I was thinking something like below 35 watts will do nicely as it is to play at home and rehearse with a small band.

    peavey classic 30
    line 6 spider 11
    mesa f-30
    all combo's
any of the ones you mentioned.
vht makes a 30 watter so does most every amp manufacturer. they've all got a 20-50 watt 1x12 combos that will do nicely.

just search to major manufacturers websites and send him links to the amps that you think he might have a use for. and let him deside.

I thought about the peavey but I have read that the distortion is weak...

One of my local music stores has one of these:

...and I often play it when I'm testing out different axes there. Very cheap and small for a tube combo but the tone kicks ass, very Marshall like. The gain when maxed was enough for me and I use a Recto.

If he's going to be using it live, you'll want the .22+ and not the .22 if you go that route. The .22 lacks a separate master volume control, so both channels share preamp and master volume controls, making it impossible to channel switch one and have the same volumes. The .22+ added the extra control. I have one of these and it's a great amp for cleans to classic rock to pretty heavy tones. The 5 band EQ is well worth it.

What's the budget? They're single channel, but the 20 W Soldanos have always looked interesting to me. They're based on the SLO crunch channel, so he'd probably need a pedal for heavier tones.

The budget is probably about 400-500 dollars.

Thanks for your input it actually makes sense and I didn't think about it before...
