Re: Diezel Herbert review...holy mother of god!!

Joe, the one you see in the "St.Anger rehearsal" DVD is the VH-4 (easily spotted by its trademark diagonal knob layout)
As for the album, I'm pretty sure they used it, they didn't play with too many different things like they did on Load/Reload where they mixed and matched a million different things.
I'm going back to that store tomorrow, it was that great. Gonna check out what preamp tubes are in this particular one.

They are also the only Bogner dealer in Norway, but of course they don't have any Bogner stuff in stock, so...they did have an ENGL savage though, I'll give that one a spin in which case I'll have tried the entire ENGL line

I'm kinda getting the hang of this tone crusade thing

The guy i bought my roadking from had purchased a herbert and after he got it told me it was a great amp. I have heard alot of people prefer the VH4 over the herbert though, i would love to try both amps.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've played both, but own the Herbert.
VH4= classic/hard rock
Hebert= hard rock/metal

FWIW Herbie also has the better clean channel to my ears.

[/ QUOTE ]

Can the herbert do Rock as well and do it good?

BTW - It's sKrape, and their first album was done with 5150's I believe. The second one wasn't that good.

I thought they might have been talking about Skrape too, but apparently Skrape and Scrape are two different bands. Go to the above link. Scrape is way heavier than Skrape. I wonder if Scrape had to change their name because of Skrape? BTW, on Skrape's first album I'm pretty sure they used Marshalls....at least Lynchard (sp?) anyway.

Agreed. $5,000,000 is a lot for an amp

My friend told me they used the Herbert. I believe it was for the second album. I don't follow the band and I took his word for it.

so the Herbert is more metal than VH-4? I've played with VH-4 and it was pretty metal to me, it was the only amp I got really close to Mesa Recto tone.

i'd kill for a herbert. my powerball is a great amp but the herbert is my holy grail amp and even though i could buy one i just can't bring myself to dump all that cash on it even though the tone is just amazing. it's just too damn much for a head.

oh and for those who want to hear what it sounds like recorded with other amps also check out the strung out CD exile in oblivion. they used a herbert for a bunch of it mixed with other amps and also used a rivera sub cab to fatten things up even more (gotta get one of those for my rig!!)

Thanks for clearing up the band name confusion

Siggy14: yes it will do rock really, rreally good!! you should've been there to hear my best Dio impressions just awesome. It's one of those amps that makes you a better player. Just like a Jackson USA will do

As for the price issue, I don't think it's too big a deal.
Granted, the retail equals the retail of 2 brand new 5150 mk2 heads. But that's comparing apples and turds!
Now in more close range, the ENGL Savage retails $1k lower than the Herbert. Similarly does the Triple Recto here. So, I don't know about you guys, but I'm willing to drop that extra $1k for an amp that will REALLY satisfy me and make a difference, rather than settle for something that is OKEY and sounds good, which would also be something that I'm ultimately not content with.
Skip a few beers, meals, whatever, save up the last $1k and get a Herbert and go to tone heaven!!

They're $3,500 here, only $300 more expensive than the VH-4 and still cheaper than the VH-4Stereo.

The smallest shop on earth (5 square feet) in my ometown is the only dealer for Diezel in Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg, so I got to play a VH4 before, never a Herbert. Gonna try to though, now that I heard this praise!
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

update:

I was at the dealer again today, and talked to a guy that was very knowledgeable about these amps. He has owned a Herbert for a year and a half, and he said he preferred it to the VH-4 for metal because it had more string articulation when playing chords and stuff, more string separation (for lack of a better term).

He told me they have 6L6's when delivered stock, but he liked it with 2 EL34's in there + 4 6L6's so I guess you can mix and match them in pairs.

He personally uses a 2x12 Diezel cab, he had tried the Herbert with an Uberkab and said they paired up just great!
The Diezel cabs were a little more expensive than Über cabs, but he said they are built at the same factory but the reason for the price difference is because Bogner orders a bigger volume than Diezel.

He also said the Herbert smoked the Überschall, because it was the greatest amp he had tried for metal + it can do everything else. The clean isn't "matchless-clean" but it is very good, and he felt the Über is a one-trick-pony (which we all know by now I guess..)

I asked him how it sounded when mic'ed, and he said it sounded really great mic'ed up. He said it sounded best with the Sennheiser 421 mic. He claimed to have done session work for Flemming Rasmussen (of first 3 Metallica albums production fame) and FR had really liked the sound of the Herbert.

I played it for a while just to make sure I hadn't been dreaming yesterday
It is a great amp.

Definitely. The Herbert was desinged specifically to handle high gain metal madness... but it can do just about anything from clean, to blues, to classic rock, to '80s metal, on thru modern/death metal.
