What kind of cable?

Obviously, you're supposed to use instrument cable from a guitar to a head, then speaker cable from the head to the cabinet.

What if you putting an effect like a compressor or OD BEFORE your head? Do you use instrument cable to the effect, then speaker cable to the head?

That's what I always thought, too. The reason I'm wondering is I picked up a Planet Waves cable, and it said something about using "signal cable" between the effects and into the head. I got a bit confused since I didn't know what the hell they meant by signal cable!
