John, you have an excellent preamp already. What you need is a real good power amp. You may have to break your $400 barrier to get something good, but it will make all the difference and bring the best out of the Soldano.
I really think it's either the tubes in the Carvin, or the amp itself that's killing the Soldano. When you get to this level of gear, things get pretty picky. I could easily hear the differences in cables with my SLO, yet can't with my Marshall and Recto's I tested. Cleve has mentioned this before as well.
Anyhoo, before you buy more preamps, get a real good power amp.
