John, the Mesa 50/50 got a thumbs up from Ross, who knows tone and who's opinion I trust 100%.
It would be well worth a look, I think.

You don't have much choice but say that since we've played the exact same rigs! Thanks for the endorsement though.

I don't know if the Mesa 50/50 is as good as the VHT 50W power amp (what's the number on that thing?), but it comes in at about half the price used. Heck it runs less than the Mesa 20/20 used when I last looked. It's a very solid power amp for what they demand 2nd hand. I ran into the same issues on the more expensive power amps. I still think that if you aren't running lots of stereo effects, dumping the extra gear and going with the SLO makes more sense than dumping a bunch of money into a power amp. That's why I drew the line where I did for cost/performance.

When I ran my rack system, I can count on my fingers the number of times I ever had a chance to actually use it in stereo. Most of the time, I just ran two identical signals into a stereo cab and just set separate levels to the speakers (one for my monitor and the other to what the soundman wanted in front of the mic).

Everything is overkill but so what, more is better than not enough If you use that way of thinking a SLO is overkill but you know what? The SLO is pro level with great tone, attenuate that sumbitch and be happy. I agree with what the other folks have said, dump the lower-mid level stuff and grab a nice power amp, maybe better speakers and cabs as well.

I'm an amp head and 4x12 guy all the way. I don't care how small the venue is I always played through a 4x12 with a 50 or 100w amp. Soloist said it best, dump everything and get a SLO and an attenuator

John you a very solid player and I've always questioned to myself why you played live with some the gear you have. I'm sure you'd benefit greatly from going simple and less, less in gear yet more in quality. Quality not quanity

Yeah Tim, Start with quality and then quantify as much as you can...more quality gear is better in that regard

oh just dump it all and get a slo 100 head and cab. and get rid of those overpriced PRS'. they aren't 80's metal. and for effects i'd either get a g-major or just use the boss pedals.

you don't need no stinkin rack system.

SLO's aren't going to play as well with effects as the rack setup would though.

My preference is a head over a rack setup, but if you need effects, racking it may be the way to go.

John. If you want to try out an SLO I am in NJ. Sussex/Vernon. Where do you practice in NJ. Maybe I could bring it to you and you could check it out at rehearsal. I will hang... Cool?

Thats the story of my life bro. Sometimes I think I get new amps and systems and guitars just to make gigging more challenging and painful. For instance... I feel more comfortable playing 6 string guitars rather than 7 strings yet for the gig tomorrow night I am bringing both of my 7 string guitars.
I have never been totally happy with a guitar amp. EVER. In the old days I had to settle with what I could afford. Nowadays, I could afford just about anything yet I still piece together mediocre crap. Its a huge flaw I have.
Another thing.... for once in my stinking musical life I would like to be in a band where I only need a few different amp sounds. Clean, Distorted and a boost for solo's. Instead, I wind up being the guy who has to get all the friggin sounds in every friggin obscure song we play. My last few guitarist bandmates always had it super easy. They just dragged their Dual Rectifier (or whatever) to the gig with a footswitch to change channels and a boost for solo's and thats it. They sounded great.. with no hassles and not much to think about. ME ON THE OTHER HAND... I need 400 sounds, I need to drag my keyboards, racks , mixers and everything else along with my mulitchannel multieffected amp system with pedals and boxes and all kinds of crap everywhere when all I really want to do is plug into an amp and play. Even my new band in NJ has me layering live, playing nylon acoustic patches, synths, all kinds of studio effects... etc...
It seems I am the only guy who will take the time to program and get everything perfect. That sucks for me.
We have a gig tomorrow night. I have to bring a ton of gear. I will be steppin on pedals and switching patches and all kinds of crap all night along with dragging a truck load of synthesizers so that we can do 2 songs that involve keyboards. They even want me to bring my digital recorder and figure out a way to get the soundman to patch it in and record us. Yea.. I'll do that after I set up my guitar rig and my synth rig. Thank God that Sambencuda is in the band. He has been taken some of the burden away from me with his Vetta.
Just give me a fukkin SLO, a G-Major and a few Bogner 2 x 12 cabinets and leave me the fukk alone.

After this gig I am seriously considering selling just about all of my gear. Currently, the only 2 pieces of gear I like are my Boss GT-6 and my Marshall 3203. Why?? How the fukk do I know.

I had killer Hiwatts. Sold them
I had many killer Marshall's. Sold them.
I have had many killer Mesa's... Sold them.
I still have a 5150II that I use as a power amp because I hate it.
I have had every Carvin amp on the planet. Sold every one of them.
I had several Laney's. Sold them.
I had several Randall's. Sold them.
I had several typed of modeling amps. Sold them all.

I have had Marshall cabinets. Sold them.
I have had Mesa cabinets. Sold most of them.
I have had a few Avatar cabs. Sold them.
I have had Peavey, Crate, Carvin, and a ton other cabs. Sold them all.

HERE IS THE MESSED UP THING...
My 2 favorite amps are:
Soldano SLO100. NEVER OWNED ONE.
Matchless Spitfire. NEVER OWNED ONE.

I am going through a midlife gear crisis. I need to take a valium. Goodnight everybody. See ya tomorrow. Zippity Doo Dah.

I think you solved your own problem right here. Are you into playing music for yourself? Or for other people? I doubt the latter, since you say you hate the crowd, haha. I say get the gear you want, play what you want, and let someone worry about getting the synth stuff together, etc. However, I also understand how damn hard it is to get a band together for any length of time, and it sounds like you're mostly enjoying yourself though. But hey, I'm 17 so what do I know?
