• Whats your collective opinion of Crate Blue VooDoo

I have been on the fence about these things for about two years now..I have the means to get one if I really want it, but I just don't want to waste my time/money on something that I'm not sure about. So I am turning to you all to see what you guys think about them. Good, bad, inbetween...doesn't matter just let me know how ya'll feel about these things.
Thanks

I don't like them. Three of my local buddies around here have different versions of the blue voodoo and I've jammed on their rigs. Lots of feedback and just really terrible sounding distortion. Live / practice space cut is nonexistent unless you consider squeling feedback to be cutting through the mix. Usually at least one of the three has a Blue Voodoo in the shop at any time getting repaired. So, as you can guess, I don't care for them.

i can get a usable sound out of almost any amp so...

they are ok for the price. i'd rather have a mesa or marshall personally, or even a fender. but i have nothing against crate.

Look around for a Laney AOR or a peavey tube head (5150, ultra, vtm,...etc.) for the money a BV costs. Probably pay around as much and sound a lot better too.

yeah, never was too impressed by them either. Better sounding amps for the similar money out there.

Used to have one, not worth it. Save for a 5150; it seems that's kind of the vibe they were going for with it. That, or a vibe that totally reeks of ass.

Alright ...I think I'm getting a vibe of a slight ...only slight mind you...ummm disinterest?...in the Crate Blue Voodoo (that was sarcasm LOL) ...I respect ya'll's opinions when it comes to gear, so I think I am gonna stay away from this amp then...how's about a Peavey XXX?

I had one. It wasn't soooo bad. They're pretty inexpensive used - you could use it. There are better amps but at that price point it's not a bad deal.

I've played XXXs at length quite a few times, and enjoyed them. I'm not sure I'd want to own one as I think I'd get tired of it, but a cool amp nonetheless.

But there are owners here that will give you more indepth reviews. I like the 5150 for a lot of things too, but the XXX was pretty serious sounding. I always felt like it was the Peavey response to the recto crowd, and I like them more than rectos that I've played. Sooo.....

Definitely cooler sounding and better made than the Blue Voodoo. IMO at least.

I dig the XXX quite a bit. To me, it's the bastard son of a 5150 and a Rectifier, who's been dating a Marshall. Killer with EL34's, as well. More versatile than a 5150, but I prefer the JSX to it. Just better sounding and voiced.

I still prefer my 5150, but it's a definite one trick pony.

This is a good thread, I've been wondering if I should get one. It's take me forever to save up for a 5150 which I've been wanting for a long time. So I was wondering if I should get the BV120H since I could find a bunch on ebay for like 350. I'll have to try it out again once my new guitar comes in.

XXX is pretty nice. I had one for a while, and I often consider going back to it, but I always end deciding against it. Basically, solid cleans, with some quality high gain tones. I never used the Ultra channel and there really isn't a true "Crunch" channel.

I don't like the BV's that much personally, but if someone likes theirs, then that's great. I would recommend trying to find one to check out locally before buying one on the net though.
