  • Emergency.... power amp question!!

So my birthday is coming up next week, and basically someone is going to buy me a poweramp. They are willing to spend 200-300 dollars. I am leaning towards the Powerblock, but I have read a lot of bad things about it. I am going to be using the poweramp to power a pod, so I need something that will be plenty loud. I like the powerblock, because I can color the tone a little I think (it has a 3 band eq).

Is there anything else I should consider for that price and where could I find one? I believe there is a local music store that has either an old alesis or ada poweramp for around that price.

    Thanks,

    GMS

If you want loud, get a nady pa from musicians friend. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/482052/

Carvin. I've got a DCM150 and love it. They've also got a couple others in that price range with more power.

toejam... If you do not mind, can I ask you a few questions?

          1. What makes the DCM 150 a good choice? I am looking for something that is loud, reliable, and sounds good. It looks like I could order it directly from Carvin, which seems pretty simple...

IMO, nothing beats a Peaveyy Classic 120 for quality sound and price. The Classic 60 is great too....usually find these pretty cheap on eBay. I've owned a few and they are great. Also, you might want to check out a Tubeworks Mosvalve 1160, I currently own one and love it (although it isnt tube, great sound and LOUD

I use the Carvin pretty much for home use with my Boss GT-8 in my living room at the moment. It sounds very nice, has an eq expand button (button out is flat eq, button in is slightly scooped mids with boosted bass and treble). I haven't brought it over to my cousin's house to jam yet, but I'm sure it can get pretty loud and easily be heard over a pretty heavy drummer. I really like it because it's a single-space rack, and Carvin gear is very reliable. Hell, you get 10 days to check their stuff out and see if it'll do what you need. siggy-how does the nady sound?

Will it make a difference if I go with a poweramp that is designed to work with guitar applications (carvin, marshall, mesa, etc) or an amp that is designed to power a pa like the nady or are poweramps just powersamps regardless of how you use them?

It is a transparent amp so it wont color the tone which is exactly what you want for a pod.

What about some of these from JCguitars. I have done business with justin before, and I think he and I could get a pretty good deal. There are three.

                      3. A Hafler G150 power amp..

Would any of these work well?

At my one bands practice we use two pods into a beherener mixer then into the Nady going into two yamaha 15 inch pa speakers, we run a bass pod through it too as well as a drum machine for the times the drummer is not there. Basically this is a great setup because we dont have a room full amps (very small room we are in) If you are gonna do a pod through a power amp get either a very flat response speaker, or a pa speakers so it doesnt color your tone.

As to tube amps, personaly i never liked putting my pod through a tube amp, the pod allready mimics how a tube amp should sound so why use one! however if you are gonna get a tube amp i would get one of the mesa's as they are cold biased so it is pretty much acting like a normal power amp as the tubes really do not go into distortion (start clipping)

I almost like the idea of having a poweramp that would color the tone. I hooked the POD up to a crate practice amp, ran it through the clean channel, and used the low, mid, and treble to add to the existing tone coming from the POD. It seemed to me that having the two sets of eq's really helped my tone..

GMS, I'm bout ready to sell my Powerblock. If your interested let me know. I don't know what you've heard (the bad stuff) on the powerblock, but I've been using it to power my XTL for a few months and it works great. Plenty loud too man, I'm runnin a 2x12 Randall cab and it's loud as hell if you want it to be. And on another note, Carvin makes some great stuff too, so I'd also recommend them based on their great track record. Great products and customer service.
