Mesa 50 Cal. - opinions - help needed.

I got a line on one for cheap. What's a good price for one of these? What's the lowdown? How many channels, and what type of gain do they have?

6L6 ones are ok, EL84 ones sound better to me. Plenty of gain for old school metallica and below, maybe not quite as saturated as today's super high gain channels. Pretty close though. Shared controls, so it's hard to dial in a great clean and lead channel at the same time. If it doesn't have an EQ, you'll want to buy one and put it in the loop - they are nasally as hell without the eq.

It has the EQ, and has EL34s.

EL34s? No such thing in a mesa .50. Either you typed it wrong, or they told you the wrong tubes. I'm betting EL84s or it's a 6L6 model that some dumbass put the wrong tubes in.

Look on ebay for pricing info, that's what I do.

If it truly has EL34s it has been modded. I think these are great sounding amps. Plenty of gain for 80's style metal. Not super saturated high gain (so it still sounds like tubes unlike alot of modern "high gain" tube amps), but it has a very thick, heavy tone. Works great in a multi amp setup with a Marshall 800. These are one of the bettr bargains out there right now, especially the EL84 version.
