Running a combo with an extension speaker...

My buddy has a 212 Crate combo that he wants to run a 4x12 out of. The manual says the output of the combo is 120w at 4ohms, and that it has 2 8ohm speakers in it, which I am guessing are running in series thus putting the overall load on the transformer to 4 ohms. It doesn't actually say what the combo is RATED at anywhere on the combo or in the manual, but I have never heard of a guitar amp being rated lower than 4 ohms, so is it even possible to run an extension speaker without risking damage to the transformer? If he ran a 4 ohm cabinet out of the extension jack wouldn't the overall load be 2 ohms? The manual says that the extension jack is wired in series with the speakers so that the speakers still function when using the extension jack. Anybody able to point out the error in my logic? I doubt they would put an extension speaker jack on there if you couldn't use it...

if it is a stereo head, and has 2 spaker jacks per side. run the combo speakers on one side and the extention cab on the other.

my suggestion is reading the manuel for that particular model and follow its directions. if you don't have the manuel. i'm sure you can download it from crate's site.

Already checked the manual and it says NOTHING about how to use the extension jack! There is only one extension speaker jack, not stereo....definitely a confusing piece of work...

ahh, just plug it in and rip! if you are that worried about it, unplug the combo speakers and just use the cab.

What model of Crate is it? My brother had a GFX212 combo that automatically shut off the internal speakers when an cab was connected...

...but my Peavey combos always keep the internal speakers on. I run 4 ohm 2x12 cabs under my Classic 212 and Special 212. No impedance mentioned on the Special (solid state) and the Classic says 4 ohms...but doesn't specify if that's for the cab only or total. I gig with that setup and have had no problems.
