• Galien Krueger RB800 problem

Our RB800 bass head crapped out a few days ago.
It was working fine when all of a sudden it made a loud hum and popped the fuse. We replaced the fuse, turned it on and as the hum started coming on the fuse popped again. Nothing in the amp appears burnt or melted but if you stick your nose in it, it does have a minor burnt smell to it. The local shops won't even look at it. They don't repair GK equipment. Any ideas? I am stuck trying to figure it out.
Many thanks in advance.

Man, I knew two bass players that had those amps and both blew them up a few times...

Sounds like maybe an output transistor took a dump.

Every SS amp I have fixed (all 3 of them) had the same symptoms you are describing. All three of them had a bad rectifier in the PS.

I can replace the rectifier, It looks like a standard one. I'll try that first. Is there anyway to check to see if a rectifier is good?

I had one for a month ...ran mine w /2 Hartke cabs..

mine did the same thing ..It cost me 50 bucks to have it repaired. I can't recall exactly what took a dump.

A friend of mine also blew his up twice.. same thing.

I got it working and dumped it...that had to be around 1988..

I switched to Carvins and never looked back..never blew up a Carvin yet ..

BTW John G ..please don't ever run that head with ANY Hartke cabs..I blew up a brand bew 1 15 XL cab with that damn thing. If I remember right, I biamped my GK 800RB..it had a 300w output for the bottom and 100wt output for the top...the Hartke cab just couldn't take it and it was barely band level.

Those heads sound pretty decent when they work..

Good luck,

Bill

Second only to loose connections, that is the most common failure.

Hey Matt,
You're in Syracuse? Do you have a retail store? I'm up in Central Square.

I had no idea you were there. I'll have to stop down someday when I'm in the area.
