Re: Ubershall help

Good deal. I have an Uberschall and a Triple Rectifier. I love them both! I definitely think the Rec needs a lot of volume to sound its best, but the Uber sounds awesome at any volume!! Enjoy your new Bogner!

The bogner is a great amp, but there is just something about a mesa recto for rythem, just has a tone that is to die for.

I sent that prototype bogner back today, so lets see how well i do getting my money back.

Siggy, we've had our diffrences in opinion regarding amps before (Stiletto and Road King), and I've never cared much for the tone of the Recto's. I'm just curious as to the type/style of music that you play and the guitars that you use with these amps.

My playing style is so off the wall, i listen and play most anything from 80's metal, to 90's to present. I also listen to alot of screamo/emo.

mostly i am using some sort of gibson, SG or Les Paul Custom or V with the gibson 500T pickups.

I have always loved a good heavy tone and the mesa's give you that. They do have there own unique voicing. They are great amps if you take the time to break one in, tweak it and learn how to use it right. Like the Uber you cant use conventional methods of EQ'ing the amp, it takes time and patients.

The mesa's are great rythem amps, and only work good for lead if you throw a booster in front of them to tighten them up. The bogner is a great lead amp, but not quite as good of a rythem amp as a mesa, but it is a great in between. I still love my marshalls most of all for lead.

also to add, if i was playing in a band where i am doing alot of soloing and single note picking iw ould grab the uber. If i was playing in a band where i was just basically doing alot of rythem and cords the rec would be my first choice. If i am in a band where i am the only guitarist and had to do both i would grab the uber.

I guess I wanted to get apoint of reference for what you thought was "good tone". I will probably be in the market for a new amp since I traded the stiletto and you seem to have tried out most of the ones I am interested in. I would love to "pick your brain" but I wasn't sure if we would be on the same page regarding the tonal quality of these amps.
Essentially I would be using this amp for an 80's metal sound (think Lynch, old VH, Ratt, TNT, Whitesnake, etc), both rhythm and lead. It would be cool if it could wander into classic rock territory with it but not necessary as I have a Matchless Chieftain to cover those tones.
I don't care for any nu-metal tones...these aren't necessary for me. Amps I'm considering are VH4, Uber, XTC, Decatone, Herbert...any others?
Any thoughts you have would be cool.

Sig, dont forget to check out the Uber database of tone settings here:

Re: Ubershall help

Stiletto is an ok choice, it will do a convincing 80's metal, but i would get either a JCM800 2204/2203 and throw a overdrive in front or get a JCM800 2205. Other choices are the JMP's with distortion pedals in front or a JMP-1 with a power amp. I went through the same search you are gonna be going through, and i tell you i just couldnt get the exact same sound without doing the older marshalls and it was driving me crazy. I ended up with a JCM800 2204 with a Ibanez tube screamer or a Boss SD-1 in front and i am in 80's metal heaven.

On a side note i also had a splawn modded 1987X and that will get you there too, but splawns production amps are better then there modded marshalls.

I played my uber last night but it sounded shitty. Some days I can get the best tones and others I suck. I love the uber. But latley I've been playing my powerball.

That will happen to me too on any amp, so what i do is turn it off, play another amp then go back and i am usually fine.

Re: Ubershall help

Zakkwylde74..I experienced that for the longest time...I contributed it to the EL34 tubes...

I think that's a bad choice of tube for that amp's power section...something with less break up and cleaner bottom end would have been better..be it KT88s / 6550's/ even 6L6...I think.

You don't need any "break up" and or compression from sheer volume in a high gain head such as the Uberschall...old Marshalls yes...Ubers no!

The character of the amp changes when you push the amp passed a certain threshold..especially at very high "band reherasal" levels..

what I did to remedy this ..sorta...was to re-tweak EVERYTHING at THOSE levels...then leave it there......just leave it be..it'll still sound good at night when the wife..kids..or neighbors are sleeping..

the ONLY knob I touch on the Uber ..at different volumes is the presence knob..which is really a high mid frequency control to me..you get more enough presence control using the treble control..

I usually keep the presence pretty high and the mids pretty low..

Like Siggy mentioned..

It's like when your out and about in your car and you got the tunes CRANKED...you go shopping ...come back and start the car...your car stero kicks on and you go ...WOW...I was listening to that shit??!!!

Ear fatigue I guess...after a few minutes to get your ears adjusted ...you crank the stereo up again..and it's fine.

i also think it has alot to do with power, and if your power is sagging a little in your house or at a club it will effect the tone of a tube amp. I am really thinking of getting a furman power regulator, i found one of the older models for $359 shipped. http://www.8thstreet.com/product.asp...Category=Cases

But I think I'm too cheap to splurge for a really good juice regulator tho..$359..ouch!
