  • Attenuators, lets discuss

Ok, I'm looking into getting a THD hotplate 8ohm for my Mesa Stilleto. Before I go that route, tell me about the Marshall Power Brake, Webber Mass and Tom Shultz Power Soak. Tell me why these others are better or worse than the THD. I've never used an attenuator so this is all new ground for me.

    Thanks!

I would recommend the THD Hotplate. I've heard from other people that the Marshall PB started to smoke and crap out, and it's not that uncommon for it to do so. I used to ask people about it when I worked in my old music store, and in the end they ended up buying the THD. I haven't used it, so I can't personally confirm that, but I've heard it enough times to recommend the THD one to other people. Good luck in the search

Well, Ive also heard some bad reports about the Marshall Power breaks. Plus, IIRC its the most expensive option.

The Tom Scholz Power Soak is an aged device. Probably pretty hot in its day (IIRC, it was the first commercially availible attenuator) now, its probably not as good as the THD, BUT thats just pure speculation. Ive never tried one, so anyone who feels differently feel free to prove me wrong.

The THD is an excellent attenuator, with no real big issues. I have tried this one, and if I were to go out and buy an attenuator, This is probably the one I would pick up.

Ive heard that the weber Mass is also good, but I have no experience with that one, so thats all I will say on that.

I have a 25 watt weber mass I use with my 18 watt marshall and matchless. It works great.

I have been using a THD hot plate on my Mesa Dual Rec for a about a year and it works great. No problems and does not mess with the tone. I highly recommend getting one. You can get the full out tone without shattering all the windows. One of the best gear purchases I ever made! And no I don't work for THD.

I have the 4 ohm THD one. It is a must for me in my small room with a JCM 800.
I like the dB dial on it. I turn it pretty low when looping songs I'm trying to learn.
My first Hotplate, But I have NO issues with it.

One other plus on the Mass is that it actually has a speaker gut built into it, *and* you can use the same one with different ohm loads. The THD you have to buy one for each ohm load.

guys, does anyone has 100 watt weber? How do you like it? Any comparison to a THD, if had experience with both?
                  thank you,

I have a soldano which I run into either one 4x12 (8 ohms) or two 4x12s (4 ohms). Does that mean I'd need two THD Hotplates - one for each setup?

The reason I suggested the Weber Mass is for that very reason, one unit can be used from anywhere from 2-16 ohms. Any attenuator is going to affect your tone and the Weber lets you compensate for the loss...

Jim, the Weber Mass with the selectable ohms is the one to get.
