• XXX users...

So I am going to change my tubes and I think I am going with EL34's this time but, I am also going to change the pre amp tubes as well...I was just wondering what seems to be the best combos in your experiences.

I read the Eurotubes stuff about the E34L's being nice in the earier XXX amps....(I think mine is an early production amp) but I don't know if I want to take a chance and blow my resistors.

I read that a ecc803 in the V1 slot does some good things.

    Any help appreciated.

You can't use the E34L in the early amps. I like the JJ, Svetlana, or SED EL34's. I like Chinese 12AX7's best. JJ 12ax7's can be too dark and muddy.

      Re: XXX users...

Thanx Jerry...Jon at thetubestore.com suggested Svetlana EL34's and Tunsol 12AX7. The Tunsons are a bit pricy so I might just go with his other suggestion of Electro Harmonix 12Ax7EH.

They say the Svetlana EL34's are heavy in the mids. I'm not too big on the mid rangy amps...But I sure would cut through.

        I have a 12AT7 in V2, and EH 12AX7's everywhere else - with 6L6 power tubes, though.

I loved my amp before the 12AT7, but now I love it even more: it is still as nasty as it was before, I just have to get a little higher on the gain to get it there, and everything below that nasty is room for more classic rock tones that I just couldn't get before.

To my piss poor ears, anyway.

Going to try some EL34's in there sometime, myself...

        p.s. I tried an ECC832 (a 12DW7) in V1 and V2 before settling on the 12AT7. Man, I hated it. H A T E D it. It was like turning the "ass" up to 11. YMMV.

            Re: XXX users...

I found the best results to come from either EH or high gain graded JJ's in the pre, and JJ EL34's in the poweramp.
