• boss ds-1s - good or crap?

i got my boss ds-1 today finally and after all the expectation i was sooo disappointed - it is without doubt the worst distortion pedal i've heard - horrible and harsh. so why do so many people love them ??:S

I have a modded one (did keeley and a few other mods to it) it sounds ok. Stock it sounded like shit.

i think alot of people use them as boosts more or less. ive managed to get a great sound with it with the gain channel of my 5150, though i forgot how i got it and i cant get it back for the life of me.

i definately wouldnt use it as my primary distortion

i did also try to use it just as a boost but couldn't quite get it - it just killed my sound

I use it just for mild overdrive, nothing more. In the past year I stick only to Danelectro, because their units suit my style best.

i HATE it. the sd-1 is better, but not much. i haven't tried any modded ones, though
basically the tone knob lets you decide whether you want a harsh ice-pick'ey sound, or a big muddy mess.

+1

I've used it to boost a distorted amp and it worked well.

Re: boss ds-1s - good or crap?

It all depends on the amp your using and the settings.
I used one to bump up the gain a little in an old JCM Marshall I had and it worked great. As a stand alone distortion pedal... unless its modded, its pretty crappy. FYI... there are a ton of pedals like the DS-1 that people love that will sound like crap under the wrong conditions.
Namely:
Rat
Rat 2
Turbo Rat
MXR Distortion +
If you are looking to slam your tube amp in the mouth and you are using the amps distortion, you should be using an overdrive or a preamp.
If you are looking for the pedal to create the distorion you need to spend more money and get something better than the DS-1.

I had one to use with my jcm 800, and didn´t like it that much, to buzzy or something.
I prefer my new Rocktron Austin gold overdrive big time

Personally i think they are crap too. I thought the turbo distortion sounded better.

I use a SD-1 which my JCM900 to give a tighter sound. So i don't drown with so much bass because i tune down to B. That's the main reason why many people use them.

A friend of mine uses a Digitech Metal Master pedal into a clean setting of a crappy Laney combo. It sounds pretty good and you can get some useable lead sounds from it.
